Following the Electrified GV70’s refresh in 2025, the enhancements have earned the model the top spot in the Premium category against tough competition from luxury competitors.

“It is a true testament to the Electrified GV70 that it has now received two awards at the prestigious Scottish Car of the Year Awards,” said Ben Sargeant, Director of Genesis UK and Customer Strategy, who accepted the award on behalf of the brand.

“At Genesis we strive to continuously elevate our products and support our customers through our ‘Son-nim’ customer-centric approach. This can be seen in the thoughtful updates in the newest Electrified GV70 model, bringing a sense of exclusivity to the SUV segment. More than a luxury vehicle, Genesis is a sanctuary where advanced safety features and exceptional craftsmanship come together to create an elevated driving experience.

Several of the marque’s models have been independently recognized for their safety features, passing the most strenuous safety testing with flying colors. Most recently, six Genesis models were recognized for their excellent safety performance by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Independently Recognized

The IIHS awarded the 2025 GV60, 2025-26 GV70 (built after April 2024), 2025-26 Electrified GV70, 2026 G80 (built after June 2025) and 2025 GV80 models the 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) rating. IIHS also awarded the 2025 Genesis G90 the 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) rating. IIHS awards only apply to U.S. models.

But what is the IIHS and what do these ratings mean? The IIHS is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals.

Based on a vehicle’s performance in crashworthiness tests (small overlap front, moderate overlap front: updated test, and side: updated test) as well as crash avoidance and mitigation tests (headlights and front crash prevention: pedestrian), the IIHS assigns a rating for each test.

To qualify for 2025 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests and an acceptable rating in the updated moderate overlap front test. It also must earn an acceptable or good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and come with standard acceptable- or good-rated headlights.

To qualify for 2025 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front and updated side tests. It also must earn an acceptable or good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and come with standard acceptable- or good-rated headlights.

Earning the 2025 IIHS TSP and TSP+ awards positively promotes Genesis’ reputation as a manufacturer of safe vehicles in the U.S. market. This is because American consumers trust the IIHS’s scientific and systematic safety evaluation methods.

Raising Safety Standards

Earning these ratings is becoming increasingly challenging, as the IIHS’s evaluation standards have become more stringent over the past few years. In 2023, IIHS increased the weight and speed it uses in the side impact test. The same year, a nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation was added. In 2025, IIHS updated the criteria to earn the 2025 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK awards, including the requirement of better protection for second-row occupants.

Genesis welcomed the new, tougher criteria and stepped up to the plate. A total of six Genesis models earned the coveted 2025 IIHS TSP and TSP+ ratings under the more stringent IIHS regulations in 2025 — the 2025 GV60, 2025-26 GV70 (built after April 2024), 2025-26 Electrified GV70, 2026 G80 (built after June 2025), 2025 GV80, and 2025 Genesis G90. IIHS awards only apply to U.S. models.

However, over in Europe, Genesis has also won top honors from the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). The Genesis G70, GV70, G80 and GV80 won “5-star” NCAP ratings in 2021, and the Genesis GV60 received a 5-star rating from NCAP in 2022.

Beyond Just Crash Testing

Genesis vehicles do well in independent safety evaluations because they are a part of a rigorous and comprehensive Group-level culture of safety technology development and testing. Before Hyundai Motor Group even releases a new model or submits it for outside testing, it tests it in-house at its R&D Center in Namyang, a 40,000-square-meter facility specifically designed and built in 2005 for thorough safety testing.

Within the Center, the Group spends about 4,000 hours and $7 million to run approximately 100 crash tests involving 27 different types of crash test dummies to make sure each new car model has the highest possible level of crash safety. The crash tests are only a small part of the safety testing process; most of the time is taken up in analyzing the crash results to extract meaningful insights. This data, combined with real-world accident reports from national highway and safety organizations worldwide, is used to develop and refine safety features, including innovations like the world’s first composite crash airbag developed by the automaker in 2019.

The result of all this testing is a comprehensive suite of preventative technologies that work together to reduce the likelihood of accidents. Here are some of the most notable safety technologies that can be found in Genesis vehicles:

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA): Uses a combination of radar and front-facing cameras to scan the road ahead for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and even oncoming traffic at intersections. If a potential collision is detected, the system issues visual and audible warnings to alert the driver. If the driver does not react to the warning sounds, FCA can apply partial or full braking to either mitigate or entirely avoid impact.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA): Uses radar sensors on the rear corners to monitor adjacent lanes for approaching traffic. If a vehicle is detected, a warning light appears in the side mirror and an alert sounds inside the cabin. If the driver ignores the warning and attempts a lane change anyway, the system can gently steer the vehicle back into its lane or, in some situations, apply selective braking to prevent a collision.

Advanced Airbags: Vehicles made by Genesis include 8-10 different airbags to protect passengers in a variety of potential collisions. Front airbags exist for both the driver and front passenger. Also included on the driver’s side is a driver’s knee airbag to prevent leg injuries in a head-on collision. Side airbags inflate between the driver and the door, and between the passenger and the door, to prevent injuries from side impact collisions. Between the driver and front passenger is also a center side airbag that pops in between the two seats, reducing the chance of first-row occupants hitting each other’s heads or other objects in the event of a side collision. Only 10 car models in the U.S. have this type of safety measure installed. There are also two rollover curtain airbags that deploy from both sides of the roof rails above the front and rear doors that further protect the heads of occupants in the car in the event of side impact collisions. They also deploy if a rollover is detected in models that have rollover sensors.

Note: Availability of models and configurations may vary by market.

Genesis,Feature Article,Innovation,Technology,TOP SAFETY PICK+,Top Safety Pick,Brand,Awards,Cars,Electrified GV70,GV70,GV80,GV60,G90,G80

Its diamond-shaped G-Matrix pattern gradually diminishes in size toward the bottom, creating a three-dimensional effect that emphasizes the vehicle's futuristic, electric character.

The bolder bumper design further enhances this look, with a wider intake area that adds to the SUV’s powerful stance.

The iconic headlamps, a hallmark of Genesis’ Two Lines design language, now come with Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, improving light output while accentuating the elegance of the front fascia.

From the side, the redesigned Electrified GV70 boasts new 20-inch wheels finished in matte dark gray. The new wheels showcase a sporty five-spoke design optimized for aerodynamics and include resonators applied to the rim area where the wheels and tires connect, effectively reducing road noise.

The 19-inch wheels also come in matte dark gray, completing the rugged yet sophisticated look.

The rear design has been refined with a focus on clarity and visibility. The turn signals, which used to be on the bumper, have been integrated into the rear combination lamps, improving their visibility to following vehicles. The high-mounted stop lamp on the rear spoiler has been streamlined, overall resulting in a cleaner appearance.

Interior Oasis of Calm and Technology

Slipping inside the redesigned Electrified GV70, passengers are greeted by an interior that embodies the brand’s minimalist "Beauty of White Space" principle. The cabin is designed to be both technologically advanced and luxuriously comfortable, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.

The most striking feature is the new 27-inch integrated wide display, which seamlessly combines the instrument cluster and the infotainment system into a single, panoramic screen. The steering wheel has been redesigned with a new emblem and refined stitching details, adding a touch of elegance to the driver's experience.

The central air vents have been lowered to the former climate control interface, while the climate controls have been integrated with the center console and transitioned to a touch control method, resulting in a more modern design.

Elevating the interior ambiance is the new “Milky Way Pattern Mood Lighting.” Inspired by the Milky Way, this unique feature creates a mesmerizing effect with delicate pinpricks of light reminiscent of stars. Complementing the mood light is the mood lamp, which extends from the upper door trim to the center fascia, enveloping the cabin in a soothing and sophisticated glow.

The lighting elements beautifully enhance the new interior color option, “Icy Blue/Glacier White Two-Tone,” which, along with the Nappa leather and PET suede materials, accentuates the luxurious feel of the distinctive driving experience.

Performance Upgrade

On the road, the redesigned Electrified GV70 delivers impressive performance. A key upgrade is the new 84 kilowatt-hour fourth-generation battery technology with increased capacity, achieved not by increasing the number of battery cells but by improving the energy density per cell from 618 watt-hours per liter to 670. This higher energy density allows for an extended driving range compared to the previous model.

With a powerful performance of up to 360 kilowatts (approximately 490 metric horsepower) in Boost Mode, the driving range on a single charge reaches 423 kilometers with 19-inch wheels, an improvement from the predecessor’s 400 kilometers with the same-sized wheels.

Equipped with dual motors at the front and rear, the redesigned model pulls off a maximum output of 320 kilowatts (about 435 metric horsepower) and a peak torque of 600 newton-meters (approximately 61.2 kilogram-force meters). With Boost Mode, these figures rise to a maximum output of 360 kilowatts (about 490 metric horsepower) and a peak torque of 700 newton-meters (about 71.4 kilogram-force meters).

The latest EV model also boasts excellent fast-charging performance. Using a 350-kilowatt ultra-fast charger, the battery can go up from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 19 minutes.

What’s more, the improved Battery Conditioning Mode maintains the battery at an optimal temperature for fast charging, backing performance in hot weather.

Next-Level Comfort

A key improvement in the comfortable ride of the latest Electrified GV70 lies in the rear suspension bushings. Climbing into the car, already behind schedule, only to be greeted with an ice-covered window can be infuriating.

Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) hopes to tackle this universal inconvenience with its latest technology called Metal-Coated Heated Glass, which is designed to self-heat using a 48-volt power system, melting frost within minutes. It also resists solar radiation without compromising visibility, making it an effective solution for both harsh winters and scorching summers.

Tests on both the Genesis Electrified GV70 and the GV60 have shown promising results.

Metal-Coated Heated Glass

Defrosting windshields in sub-zero temperatures can be a challenging task. Relying solely on heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is barely enough, mainly because the low thermal conductivity of air hampers the quick circulation of warm air throughout the cabin.

In today’s era of autonomous driving, this issue becomes even more critical, as sensors attached to the windshield play a vital role in collecting essential data for self-driving systems. Any residual frost or moisture on the windshield can impede sensors’ ability to gather crucial information on the road, impacting the reliability and performance of autonomous vehicles.

This is where the Group’s Metal-Coated Heated Glass comes in.

The technology features an inherent glass-heating capability, offering superior defrosting performance. In other words, this special type of glass raises the temperature of the glass itself, allowing for the complete removal of frost.

48-Volt Power System

The key to achieving exceptional defrosting performance with Metal-Coated Heated Glass lies in the adoption of a world-first 48-volt power system, which quickly transmits heat from the electrically powered metal coating to the glass.

The coating applied inside the glass, which consists of nearly 20 layers of metal components including silver, enables the glass to heat up when current passes through the windshield.

“The 48-volt power system is optimized for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids, which utilize high-voltage battery power,” says Giheon Jeong, Senior Research Engineer at the Group’s exterior engineering design team for mid- and large-sized vehicles, who developed the technology. “It applies higher voltage than the Group’s conventional 13.5-volt power system.”

With a 48-volt power system, Metal-Coated Heated Glass can reach up to 75 degrees Celsius from room temperature. While it’s technically possible to achieve even higher temperatures, the Group has decided to limit the range out of safety precautions, Jeong explains.

Metal-Coated Heated Glass can remove frost in as little as 5 minutes at temperatures as low as minus 18 degrees Celsius. In comparison, it takes the 13.5-volt power system more than 15 minutes to remove the frost in the same environment.

Another notable feature of Metal-Coated Heated Glass is its excellent forward visibility. Conventional heated glass often comes with the drawback of visible tungsten wires, which obstruct the driver’s vision. The Group’s Metal-Coated Heated Glass, on the other hand, features a transparent metal coating, thus providing a clear, undistorted view without any glare or distortion.

The Group has filed for patents for Metal-Coated Heated Glass in Korea and other major foreign markets, with plans underway to incorporate it into future vehicles.

Solar Heat Rejection

Metal-Coated Heated Glass is effective during summer as well.

By reflecting infrared radiation and emitting its own heat, the technology can reject at least 60 percent (according to ISO13837 standards) of the solar heat striking the glass, limiting the rise of cabin temperatures by up to 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

The technology stands out even when compared to general heat-blocking tinting films.

Most thermal insulation tinting films with the equivalent performance as Metal-Coated Heated Glass have a visible light transmission rate below the standard requirement of 70 percent. As a result, installing such tinting films makes it difficult for drivers to maintain clear vision in adverse weather conditions. In contrast, Metal-Coated Heated Glass not only meets the visible light transmission rate of 70 percent, but also ensures bright and clear visibility.

Metal-Coated Heated Glass is also free from the issue of communication interference that’s often found in tinting films. The metal components contained in tinting films can disrupt radio waves and infrared communication, occasionally leading to abnormal operations of cellular communication and GPS signals inside the vehicle.

Metal-Coated Heated Glass, however, leaves areas where heating is unnecessary uncoated, and employs pattern-processing techniques on the metal-coated surface. This effectively allows the glass to maintain the same level of radio wave reception performance as regular glass.

A Step Forward

Looking into the future of mobility design, Metal-Coated Heated Glass could have profound implications.

There’s the potential elimination of air vents on the upper crash pad, used for defrosting and dehumidifying. This could open exciting possibilities for cutting-edge innovations like full head-up displays leveraging the entire windshield, or the integration of big-screen augmented reality navigation systems.

Going forward, Jeong says he anticipates Metal-Coated Heated Glass to play a particularly important role in EVs.

“Efficiently managing thermal energy in EVs not only allows for greater utilization of convenience features inside the cabin, but also helps to increase driving range,” he notes. “We are taking a significant step toward the future of mobility.”

Genesis,Cars,Models,GV60,Innovation,Technology,Metal-Coated Heated Glass,Feature Article,Electrified GV70

This year’s evaluation upgraded the GV70 and the Electrified GV70 from their prior TOP SAFETY PICK ratings.

“At Genesis, the safety of our customers always comes first,” said Cole Stutz, Chief Safety Officer of Genesis Motor North America. “The recognition of the GV70 and the Electrified GV70 SUVs as TOP SAFETY PICK + by the IIHS further validates our dedication to providing the safest vehicles on the road.”

To qualify for 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side test and no less than acceptable in the updated moderate overlap front test. It also must earn an acceptable or good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and come with standard acceptable- or good-rated headlights.

All Genesis models are equipped with a comprehensive suite of exceptional active and passive safety technologies, including Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist and Blind-Spot Collision Warning. Each vehicle in the Genesis lineup offers standard advanced safety features that help avoid crashes and provide advanced occupant protection when crashes do occur.

The 2025 Genesis GV70 and the 2024 Electrified GV70 are equipped with a robust set of safety and driver assistance technologies, including:

Eight standard airbags, including front, side and curtain for both the driver and passenger, a driver knee airbag and a center airbag to protect against injury in the event of an accident.

Highway Driving Assist* helps center the vehicle within the driving lane at an appropriate speed, while keeping a safe distance from the car in front.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist** provides audible and visual warnings and applies brakes when the vehicle detects a potential collision.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist*** helps reduce the chance of potential impact with a vehicle that is detected in the blind spot.

High Beam Assist helps keep the driver and others safe by automatically turning on and off the high beams based on the ambient light and illumination from the headlamps of oncoming vehicles.

Genesis Connected Services and Connected Care provide always-on connection and allow for peace-of-mind safety features like Automatic Collision Notification, Enhanced Roadside Assistance and SOS Emergency Assistance when the vehicle has access to a cellular network connection.

*Highway Driving Assist (HDA) is for highway use only and can help keep the vehicle centered in its lane while maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead when the lane markings are clearly visible on the road and should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads. HDA 2 will not work under all circumstances and will not prevent loss of control. The driver remains responsible to slow or stop the vehicle to avoid a collision. HDA 2 may not function correctly if one or more of the vehicle sensors are damaged, dirty or covered or if weather conditions (heavy rain, snow or fog) are interfering with the sensor operation. Always drive carefully and use extreme caution when other vehicles are present. See Owner’s Manual for details and limitations.

**Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) is designed to notify drivers of approaching cross-traffic behind their vehicles. When another vehicle is detected while you are backing out of a parking spot, it provides audible and visual display warnings and applies braking if it senses a collision is imminent. RCCA is active when the vehicle is in reverse gear and backing at a speed of less than 6 miles per hour. It only engages during the first activation of reverse gear from park and may not detect all vehicles, depending on the size, angle, distance and speed of the other vehicle. Never rely exclusively on RCCA. Always look over your shoulder and use your mirrors to confirm rear clearance. There are limitations to the function, detection, range and clarity of the system. See Owner’s Manual for details and limitations.

***Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) helps the driver by warning of other cars in the blind spot region and can apply braking to help prevent an unsafe lane change. It senses the rear side territory of the vehicle when it is traveling over 20 miles per hour. There are limitations to the function, range, detection and clarity of the system. It will not detect all vehicles or objects in the blind spot. Its operation depends on the size, distance, angle and relative speed difference between your car and other cars. BCA may not operate if sensors are obscured in any way. Do not rely exclusively on BCA. BCA is a supplemental system and the driver must still be attentive and exercise caution when driving. It is important to always signal, look over your shoulder and through your mirrors before changing lanes. It is the driver’s responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and ensure it is clear before changing lanes or directions. See Owner’s Manual for details and limitations.

Disclaimer: Specifications may vary depending on region. That’s why Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) goes the extra mile to eliminate any uncertainties, especially in regard to battery safety.

With over 15 years of dedicated research, Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) has made significant advancements in battery management systems, known as BMS. Widely referred to as the vehicle’s “brain,” BMS effectively provides the necessary control information to ensure optimal utilization of batteries, giving EV owners peace of mind.

What is BMS?

A key role of the Group’s BMS is precise battery system monitoring. By swiftly detecting any abnormalities in the battery’s performance, it assesses the level of risk and performs necessary safety controls within the vehicle. When necessary, it also alerts the car owner of those anomalies, thus preventing any major issues from arising.

EV battery fires can occur for various reasons, but the majority are due to cell defects or cell shorts caused by impacts. To watch out for any irregularities in this regard, the Group’s BMS constantly monitors the battery during driving and charging, and even periodically during parking.

Among the variety of factors monitored by the BMS are voltage deviation, insulation resistance, current and voltage fluctuations, as well as temperature and overvoltage. In the Group’s latest released vehicles, the systems are equipped with additional capabilities to detect instantaneous and micro-short circuits, enabling them to identify potential faults that might have occurred several days or weeks prior.

Recognizing the effectiveness of these short circuit detection technologies in spotting potential battery fires, the Group plans to implement them in all newly sold vehicles. For previously sold EVs, the Group intends to develop relevant update tools by the end of the year for gradual application.

How Does BMS Work?

When the BMS detects signs of abnormalities, it promptly initiates necessary safety controls and, depending on the severity of the risk, immediately notifies the car owner. This involves communicating the detected signs to a remote support center, which then triggers an automatic text message to be sent to the owner, advising them to bring the vehicle in for inspection.

Going forward, the Group is looking to further improve the BMS so that it automatically alerts local authorities of severe risks. Other efforts include developing an “onboard-cloud integrated safety management system,” which combines advanced diagnostic technology and cloud server-based remote precision diagnostics, utilizing physical and machine learning models.

3-Step Overcharging Prevention System

Throughout the history of the Group’s EV vehicles, there hasn’t been a single case of an EV fire caused by overcharging. This can be attributed to the effective monitoring capabilities of the BMS and its seamless coordination with the charging controller.

The Group’s overcharging prevention technology incorporates a reliable three-step system that guarantees safety:

Step 1. The BMS and charging controller constantly manage the charging process of high-voltage batteries, ensuring safe charging within the optimal current range.

Step 2. The BMS monitors the battery’s charging status in real-time. If it discovers any deviations from the normal range, it quickly triggers the charging process to halt.

Step 3. In the unlikely event that both the vehicle control unit and battery control unit malfunction, a physical safety circuit is triggered, forcibly disconnecting the current pathway.

Cell Balancing Technology

Another key aspect of the Group’s BMS is its cell balancing technology, which comprehensively manages the battery cells to maintain optimal durability and performance.

The BMS detects any cases of voltage variation among cells and performs cell balancing control to minimize the voltage difference. It also constantly monitors battery temperature and overall condition to calculate and control the maximum power output that the battery can provide.

Disclaimer: Features may vary depending on region. Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) is doubling down on four key areas to efficiently maximize this capability.

Thermal Management System

Thermal management systems play a crucial role in maintaining the optimal temperature of batteries.

For lithium-ion batteries, the optimal temperature under normal driving conditions is typically between 20 and 35 degrees Celsius. To maintain this temperature range, EVs, like internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, use cooling systems that circulate coolants.

Most automakers rely on what are called positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heaters to warm EV cabins, a type of electric heater that converts electrical energy into heat. The Group goes a step further and employs “heat pump” technology that utilizes wasted energy, increasing efficiency by over 10 percent at low temperatures compared to conventional systems.

To enhance heat pump technology, the Group is further conducting research on “gas injection” technology, which increases the refrigerant flow rate at ultra-low temperatures, allowing for greater heat recovery and significant improvement in efficiency.

Battery Energy Density

To increase the range and efficiency of EVs, the Group is also conducting research to improve the energy density of batteries, chiefly focusing on the following four areas.

1. Enlarging Battery Cells for Higher Energy Capacity

One way to increase the driving range per charge is to increase the amount of energy stored within the battery cells, which can be achieved through upscaling the battery cells. While the number of components going into smaller and larger cells remains the same, larger cells tend to have a decreased volume ratio for these components, which results in more space within the battery cell to store energy.

2. Thick Film for High Current Density

The Group is also changing the internal design of batteries by incorporating thick film technology. While conventional battery cells involve stacking thin layers of anode and cathode materials, along with aluminum and copper collectors, the use of thick film technology enables an increase in the thickness of positive and negative electrodes. This helps reduce the need for auxiliary materials like separators, consequently increasing energy density and saving resources such as aluminum and copper required for manufacturing the battery.

3. ‘Two-Stage Cathode Press’ for Cell Thinning

Cathode pressing involves compressing the cathode using a press, which helps to shrink the size of the battery pack while increasing the energy density of the battery. What normally complicates this seemingly simple process is the occurrence of the “spring back” phenomenon — wherein the cathode thickness increases after the pressing process. To tackle this issue, the Group has developed a double-press method, which allows for the creation of battery cells with the desired thickness.

4. ‘Bat Ear’ Volume Reduction

Bat ear volume reduction is a technique used for pouch-type battery cells, which consist of a functional layer that enables adhesion. When heat is applied to both sides, the layer forms a pouch. The Group’s research concentrates on folding any protruding parts — or bat ears — during this process, ultimately reducing the overall volume during stacking. This enables a higher energy capacity within the battery cell.

Battery Materials

Battery material research is not to be overlooked. The Group is conducting research on various material technologies to enhance energy density in battery cells.

With cathode materials, efforts are being made to increase the nickel content and improve the lifespan and stability. What began as a 30 percent or lower nickel content in the early development of lithium-ion batteries has now reached up to 80 to 90 percent. However, high nickel content can have some disadvantages in terms of lifespan and thermal stability, which is why the Group is trying to solve this issue by minimizing chemically induced reactions through various element combinations and surface treatments.

In the case of anode materials, research is primarily conducted in the high-densification of graphite particles, with the Group also working on enhancing energy density through the development of high-capacity silicon technologies. Silicon anode materials are drawing attention as potential replacements for graphite-based anodes due to their unit energy density advantage, which is more than 10 times higher. However, their drawback being natural volume expansion during charge and discharge processes necessitates the development of techniques to control this expansion. The Group, therefore, is studying ways to enhance anode energy density through the appropriate combination of silicon and graphite materials.

Another area of research centers around battery electrolyte volume. While electrolytes do not have a significant impact on cell capacity, reducing their volume can improve cell energy density.

Other subjects of research include optimizing the usage of electrolytes and exploring the use of high-performance additives to improve the lifespan and output of battery cells. The Group is also working to reduce the thickness of the separator, which would reduce the volume it occupies within the battery cell.

Ultra-Fast Charging

To significantly reduce waiting times for EV charging, the Group is studying optimal battery materials and structural designs aimed at minimizing heat generation and lowering resistance, partly by applying new algorithms.

One example is the so-called battery preconditioning feature, which optimizes the battery temperature even before charging begins. With batteries typically having much lower charging efficiency at lower temperatures, this reduces the initial resistance, ultimately quickening the speed of charging.

Genesis,Feature Article,Cars,Models,Innovation,Technology,Electrified G80,EV,aer,PTC,heat pump,bat ear,ev range,thermal management system,Electrified GV70

But Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) strives to take a more proactive approach than this by actively collaborating with battery manufacturers from the development stage.

In this process of collaboration, battery manufacturers primarily concentrate on advancing battery technology, while the Group, which directly interacts with consumers, looks at developing battery technology that realizes customer value — batteries that are safe, easy to maintain and can be integrated into vehicles at the most reasonable price range.

Meticulous Coordination

When developing EVs, the Group first sets various performance targets for driving range, efficiency, power performance and charging time. It then determines factors like design, weight and aerodynamic coefficient, and accordingly calculates the required performance for components like electric motors, inverters and battery systems.

Just as the engine needs to be well-matched with the transmission in internal combustion vehicles, EVs also require meticulous coordination of drivetrain components such as electric motors, inverters and battery systems. This is so because each component has a close influence on one another. For instance, the inverter converts the battery’s direct current into alternating current to assist the operation of the electric motor, and the output of the electric motor is influenced by the voltage and current of the battery.

The Group’s battery roadmap, therefore, takes various factors into consideration while seeking to maintain technological leadership through ongoing research and development in all areas.

Investing in Innovation and Collaboration

In January 2022, the Group opened the HMG Battery Development Center, an integration of all the Group’s organizations related to battery development, including design, testing and advanced development. Over the following decade, the Group vowed to invest KRW 9.5 trillion for comprehensive research on cell and system design, hardware and software battery management system (BMS) as well as battery safety enhancement for EVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

The HMG Battery Development Center sets its goal on becoming the “farthest, fastest and safest Smart Battery Solution Provider,” in line with the wider Group’s goal to become a “Smart Mobility Solution Provider.” Various external collaborative efforts are being undertaken in pursuit of this objective.

In partnership with Seoul National University, the Group launched a joint battery research center to conduct research on the advanced development of BMS and next-generation batteries. The Group is also collaborating with start-ups and major battery manufacturers like SK on and LG Energy Solution to foster joint research and secure manufacturing process technology.

As a result of recognizing the importance of a stable material supply for battery development and production, the Group has built a battery cell joint venture factory in Indonesia, allowing for convenient exports to the ASEAN region.

Further plans are in place to pursue supply contracts for lithium and establish a sustainable battery life cycle through waste battery collection and material recycling.

Breaking Barriers

Looking to the future of EV batteries, the Group is cooperating with specialized companies from around the world to advance the development of lithium-ion batteries. Research spans across improvements in stability, increased energy density for extended driving range, expanded output to shorten charging time and a reduction in production costs for wider distribution.

However, increasing the capacity of lithium-ion batteries alone is not enough to lead the future EV market. In this respect, the Group is accelerating the development of core technologies for next-generation batteries, focusing on three main directions.

The first is to increase the energy density of the battery cell, which means developing lithium metal battery technology that replaces graphite with lithium metal as the cathode material, which can theoretically store 10 times more energy than lithium-ion batteries.

The second endeavor centers around price reduction, where cobalt-free batteries can be a good illustration. Cobalt, although vital for durability, increases overall battery costs due to its high price. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are a prominent example of cobalt-free batteries. The Group aims to commercialize LFP batteries through joint research around 2025 to secure price competitiveness in the EV market.

The third development concentrates on the advancement of high-safety batteries to address the vulnerability of safety that comes with increased energy density. The development of solid-state batteries and research on thermal runaway prevention technology are expected to greatly change the course of battery technology.

The Group plans to pilot-produce EVs with all-solid-state batteries in 2025, with full-scale mass production to follow around 2030. The development of these next-generation batteries will play a crucial role in shaping the future of mobility, not only in EVs but also in robotics and advanced air mobility (AAM) applications.

Genesis,Feature Article,Hyundai Motor Group,HMG,BMS,LFP batteries,cobalt-free,EV,battery,Cars,Models,Electrified G80,Electrified GV70,Innovation,Technology,Brand,Corporate,lithium

Now we will expand our golf sponsorships to deliver our differentiated brand experiences in Europe, where golf originated.”

An All-Star Field, Formed Through Partnership

As part of a strategic alliance between the two circuits, the field will be split as follows: 75 DP World Tour members, 75 PGA TOUR members, three Professional Invitations and three KPGA players. The stellar lineup includes all four reigning Major champions: Scottie Scheffler (No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking), Jon Rahm (No. 3), Collin Morikawa (No. 4) and Justin Thomas (No. 5), among 14 of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking —which makes it the strongest-ever field for a DP World Tour event.

DP World Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley said, “We are delighted to get this new era for Scotland’s historic national open under way, as the event is co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR for the first time and with Genesis as title partner. Genesis has a strong history in golf, with existing sponsorships including The Genesis Invitational on the PGA TOUR, the Genesis Championship in Korea and the Presidents Cup, and their commitment to the Genesis Scottish Open takes this premier event – which has been part of the Rolex Series since its inception in 2017 - to new heights.”

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to our partners at Genesis for their integral role in this historic week,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “Their support of the Genesis Scottish Open builds on their existing involvement with the PGA TOUR through The Genesis Invitational and Presidents Cup. The Genesis Scottish Open represents a significant win for our fans around the world offering the best field in tournament history, a historic national open that dates back to 1972 and meaningful weeks for both FedExCup and DP World Tour season-long competitions. All of this at a stunning location in the Renaissance Club where the fans are as passionate and knowledgeable as anywhere in the world.”

And with Genesis as the title sponsor, three KPGA players will grace the field: Jaekyeong Lee, Joohyung Kim and Bio Kim. Lee won the 2021 Genesis Championship, while Joohyung Kim came in first in the Genesis Point category the same year. Bio Kim earned his exemption card by winning two KPGA tournaments this year. Also at the tournament will be last year’s Genesis Scottish Open winner, Korean-Australian Min Woo Lee, and the PGA TOUR’s Korean players, Sungjae Im and K. H. Lee. Korea is one of the world’s fastest-growing golf markets, and it’s exciting that Korea’s top players can join the world stage at this year’s Genesis Scottish Open — taking their rightful place among the greats.

The tournament winner will receive an Electrified GV70 and 1.44 million USD of the 8 million USD prize purse. The first player to ace the 17th hole will receive an Electrified GV70, and his caddie will be gifted with a GV60. By generously rewarding both player and caddie, Genesis demonstrates that excellence in golf and luxury vehicles go hand in hand.

There will be approximately 140 Genesis vehicles at the Renaissance Club, including those to be given away as prizes or to be used as courtesy cars for players between schedules. 21 cars, including the Electrified GV70 and the GV60, will be on display and available to visitors for test drives. This way, golfers and fans can experience the outstanding car performance that Genesis is known for.

The Genesis Difference

In keeping with the brand’s Korean roots, Genesis treats its customers as guests — “Son-nim” in Korean. It’s taking care to extend the same ethos of hospitality to all the players, caddies, fans, and partners at the Genesis Scottish Open through various programs on-site.

There will also be a Players & Caddies Cafe by Genesis — because Genesis is committed to providing exceptional care and comfort for both players and caddies. The venue will provide light snacks and a place to rest for those on the field.

With Genesis Concierge, an activity-booking service available from the Players’ Lounge, golfers’ families can enjoy all the Edinburgh area has to offer. Taking good care of the players’ families is one of many steps that Genesis is taking to support the players so they can focus on the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Genesis Lounge, on the second floor of the Genesis Hospitality Pavilion overlooking the 18th hole, will offer fine dining and refreshments.

The Mobile Lounge will showcase Genesis’ current models, and Genesis Personal Assistants will be on hand to answer any questions about the products. Guests can visit the Test Drive Unit and speak to one of the Genesis Personal Assistants to arrange a test drive.

Genesis is committed to making a positive impact through philanthropy, sustainability and junior golf. In partnership with the Stephen Gallacher Foundation, Genesis is using the tournament as a platform to encourage young people to take up golf. There will be various efforts to make the tournament more sustainable, such as the absence of disposable plastic cups, and with unavoidable carbon emissions to be offset in a collaboration with the Gold Standard.

Culture,Sports,Golf,Genesis Scottish Open,Genesis,PGA,Press Release,Cars,Models,Electrified GV70,GV60

Markus Henne, Chief Executive Officer of Genesis Motor China, punctuated the event on site by presenting Genesis’ market strategy for the country.

The event was also broadcast worldwide via livestream on Genesis Worldwide YouTube account. (Link: https://youtu.be/diV7cg1FN9s)

“Our global vision to create a sustainable future through electrification is a natural extension of our original commitment that dates back to the launch of Genesis in 2015: the commitment to creating a positive impact in our customers’ lives,” said Jay Chang, Global Head of the Genesis Brand. “I am pleased to reveal another new EV model in China that celebrates our audacious step toward a sustainable future.”

“We are presenting the Electrified GV70 to engage with youthful and energetic Chinese customers,” said SangYup Lee, Head of Genesis Global Design. “This is more than just a new electrified SUV. It is a statement for Genesis design that marks new territory.”

“Hosting the world premiere of the Electrified GV70 underscores our commitment to the Chinese market,” said Markus Henne, CEO of Genesis Motor China. “We are excited to welcome the latest Genesis model, which will help us move toward a sustainable future.”

The Electrified GV70 sets a new standard for luxury electric SUVs

The Electrified GV70 is built on the heritage of the GV70, inheriting its predecessor’s spacious interior and adding outstanding performance and a host of new technologies designed exclusively for electric vehicles.

During the event, Genesis showcased an Electrified GV70 with an Atacama Copper Matte exterior.[1] On the exterior, the front fascia displays a careful consideration for aerodynamic efficiency and function. Genesis’ signature Crest Grille has evolved into an aerodynamic crest that features an inverted G-Matrix Pattern and incorporates a hidden EV charging port, creating a minimalist yet sophisticated look. The minimalist horizontal shape of the rear bumper completes the model’s modern image. A simplified, tailpipe-free skid plate emphasizes the SUV’s electric nature, while the iconic and progressive Two-Line Quad Lamps put the finishing touch on the electric model of GV70 with Genesis’ signature Two Lines architecture.

The interior boasts a driver-focused design, offering an intuitive and dynamic driving experience. Inspired by the ‘Beauty of White Space’ interior design concept, the Electrified GV70 offers customers the opportunity to write their own story with an interior that reflects the sustainable ambitions of this electric vehicle, as well as Genesis’ commitment to future sustainability. A variety of eco-friendly materials have been used to furnish the model, and each material features a high-quality finish, completing a design that embodies Genesis’ vision for sustainable luxury from the inside out. Genesis will offer the model with a Glacier White interior.

The competitiveness of the Electrified GV70’s interior has been enhanced by lowering the center tunnel to secure an amount of second row space that is equivalent to that of the GV70.

As an athletic and dynamic vehicle, the Electrified GV70 offers competitive and powerful performance to satisfy drivers. It will be available only as an AWD (All-Wheel Drive) model, with a maximum power output of 160kW and 350Nm of torque for the front and rear, delivering a total maximum output of 360kW (in Boost Mode) and 700Nm of torque. This powerful model can go from 0 to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds in Boost Mode.[2]

In addition, the Electrified GV70 is the first Genesis model to feature the SUV-specific e-Terrain Mode, which enables a stable driving experience in various environments.

The new model delivers a competitive all-electric range (AER). Based on the CLTC standard, the estimated maximum range per charge is over 500km (Based on the Korean EV certification system, the estimated range per charge is 400km [3]). The addition of 350kW rapid charging, meanwhile, enables the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.

Furthermore, Genesis’ application of a 400V/800V multi-rapid charging system will allow drivers to utilize various forms of charging infrastructure. The multi-rapid charging system enables fast and stable charging by raising the voltage supplied by typical chargers from 400V to 800V. The technology is optimized for the vehicle's system thanks to the model's driving motors and inverters. Customers can use the 800V rapid charging system to utilize both 400V and 800V charging infrastructure without the need for an additional converter.

The electric version of the GV70 also includes a V2L (Vehicle to Load) feature that supports a 3.6kW charge, which is higher than the power supply in the average home, enabling customers to conveniently use electric appliances outside of the vehicle.

Moreover, the Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) can automatically connect or disconnect the motor and drive shaft, considering various driving conditions. Such conditions include vehicle speed and driving mode, enabling seamless switching between 2WD and AWD – reducing unnecessary power loss while increasing efficiency.

The new model’s driving experience is further enhanced with a variety of cutting-edge technologies. The Smart Regenerative Braking System 2.0 regenerates energy through the braking system based on driving habits, real-time navigation, and road conditions. In driving mode, the i-Pedal (Intelligent Pedal) allows the driver to accelerate, decelerate and stop using just the accelerator pedal.

Genesis also equipped the vehicle with ANC-R (Active Noise Control-Road) to achieve a comfortable driving experience. The technology significantly reduces the level of noise by measuring and analyzing road noises utilizing four sensors and eight microphones and simultaneously creating sounds at opposite phases.

The Preview Electronic Control Suspension (Pre-view ECS) has been applied to support an optimal driving experience. This suspension system can be controlled based on information collected through the SUV’s front camera and navigation system.

Genesis will be displaying a total of five vehicles at Auto Guangzhou 2021, including the Electrified GV70, the G80 flagship luxury sedan, the GV80 luxury flagship SUV, and two G70 models.

Meanwhile, Genesis Motor China continues to receive positive responses in the Chinese market, having strengthened its lineup by adding the G70 in October after the successful launches of the G80 and GV80.

* Specifications and features discussed are for the Korean market only. International market features are TBC.

[1] Exterior color may vary upon official launch in each region
[2] On Sport Mode, measured by Genesis’ R&D center
[3] Estimated figures with Standard 19” wheels.
