Unfolding a New Era

The unveiling of the X Gran Coupe Concept and the X Gran Convertible Concept comes shortly ahead of Genesis’ 10th anniversary, which falls in November this year.

Ilhoon Yoon, Head of Genesis Design who presented the inspiration behind both concepts during a press event at the show, shared that the G90 flagship model is continuously evolving, allowing Genesis to showcase more interpretations and possibilities.

The tranquil Mediterranean landscape was the muse for the X Gran Coupe Concept, with the olive trees and earth tones providing the inspiration for the car’s colors and materials. Microperforated olive wood was used in the doors, while the interior was crafted with eco-friendly chrome-free leather, naturally tanned using wastewater from the olive oil refining process.

The inspiration for the X Gran Convertible Concept was no less romantic. “The concept mirrors the leisurely setting of vineyards and the freshness of the eucalyptus,” Yoon said. The colors and style of the burgundy-red exterior of the convertible were inspired by the colors of pressed grapes, he continued, mentioning that the blue interior draws upon the “deep, delicate shade of ripe Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.”

Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke remarked that the design of the interior and exterior of both concepts was derived from the brand’s guiding “Beauty of White Space” principle, stressing he was “adamant that good design is reduction.”

A Place in Motorsports

Cyril Abiteboul, Team Principal of Genesis Magma Racing, also took the stage to present the luxury brand’s motorsport ambitions.

“For Genesis, motorsport is an opportunity to redefine luxury performance and demonstrate how elegance and engineering excellence can coexist,” he said. “We aim to elevate the sport by introducing new standards of design, innovation and hospitality.”

During his presentation, Abiteboul laid out plans for the brand to enter Le Mans next year and then to add two additional cars and join the IMSA SportsCar Championship (IMSA) in 2027. “Altogether, they will provide a global platform of 20 races for Genesis to compete against some of the most iconic brands in the world.”

Dazzling Exhibition of Korean Luxury

Visitors to the Genesis pavilion at the show were treated to a carefully curated exhibit and experiences. The pavilion was designed to convey Genesis’ distinctly Korean heritage by engaging each of the five senses, known in Korean as “ogam.”

Several Genesis models were on display in and around the booth, which included the G90, the GV80 Coupe Black, the redesigned GV60, the Electrified GV70 and the GV60 Magma Concept, with the X Gran Coupe Concept and the X Gran Convertible Concept taking center stage.

Genesis Magma

One immersive installation featured a half-scale model of the highly anticipated GMR-001 Hypercar enclosed by LED screen walls, giving visitors the experience of being surrounded by its namesake fiery, molten magma.

In adjoining spaces, visitors were able to view the GV60 Magma Concept up close and also dress up as a Genesis Magma Racing driver for a photoshoot with a 360-degree camera to take home a special photo souvenir.

GV80 Coupe Black

Stepping into the hidden interior of the booth, visitors first encountered a Genesis GV80 Coupe Black ensconced in a shadowy corner. The overhead lighting accentuated its striking and bold presence, allowing its carefully formulated light-reflecting black exterior paint to show off the car’s dynamic and sweeping curves.

Surrounding the vehicle was a wall installation explaining how various exterior and interior features of the car were all blacked out, along with a display playing informative videos about the model.

Genesis Collection

Genesis also introduced its exclusive merchandise line, the Genesis Collection, at the show, displaying a range of products including small-scale models of Genesis vehicles, jacket patches, key rings and scent diffusers, each adorned with Genesis branding and colors.

Motorsports afficionados could also find Genesis Magma Racing collectibles in the signature Magma orange, with branding inspired by Korean characters.

The collection featured Genesis teddy bear keychains in three unique versions: a Genesis Magma Racing driver with an orange helmet; a Jacky Ickx teddy bear honoring the legendary racer and Genesis Brand Partner in blue racing overalls with a matching helmet; and a golfer teddy bear, each representing different facets of the Genesis brand.

Genesis Scents

Luxury is all about refinement in small things. Genesis bespoke scents further elevate the luxury experience, with three signature fragrances “Coming Home,” “Down to Earth” and “Jaunty Breeze.” All three scents are incorporated into Genesis spaces, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the brand’s unique mood.

To offer a distinct scent for each area of the booth, a scent diffusion system was utilized at Seoul Mobility Show. This multisensory experience enhanced the sense of luxury and added a uniquely Genesis touch.

Genesis Color Story

At Genesis, every color takes inspiration from different locations around the globe. The Genesis Color Story zone shared the origins behind each exterior color the brand offers. The interactive display featured paint samples that, when placed on the near-field communication (NFC) receiver of the console, played a video that explained the inspiration for the color and the philosophy behind the choice.

Exclusive Genesis Owners’ Lounge

When a Genesis owner came to the booth and presented their Genesis key fob, they were invited to enter an exclusive area within the booth — the second-floor Genesis Owners’ Lounge. The lounge offered a relaxing space where owners could enjoy tea, coffee and light refreshments.

As the concept cars were inspired by the beauty of the Mediterranean, the Genesis Owners’ Lounge offered cannoli, embodying the spirit and tradition of Sicily, in collaboration with Korean star chef Sam Kim.

That's how Minhee Ryu, Youngju Oh and Hyesoo Kim approached the task when they were assigned to develop the blackout versions of the GV80 and the GV80 Coupe. 

Ryu joined as a Senior Designer with the Genesis CMF Team, Oh as a Senior Manager from the Genesis Brand Marketing Planning Team, and Kim as a Manager of the Genesis Product Planning Team. 

With four Genesis Black models now launched in Korea and plans underway for expansion into other markets, the trio is confident that the brand has successfully set itself apart from the league. 

Four Genesis Black models have been launched so far: the G90 Black, the GV80 Black, the GV80 Coupe Black and the G80 Black. How did the all-black trim come to life? 

Oh: When we first began planning the project, we reflected on what the color black means for the brand. This intrinsic question led us to examine our very name, Genesis, which means beginning and creation. Everything starts from black; black is the origin of everything. In this sense, we felt that both Genesis and black symbolize creation, and particularly a focus on essence. By blacking out all exterior and interior elements, we are showcasing the pinnacle of our brand identity, “Athletic Elegance.”

What makes Genesis Black different from the all-black trims of other brands? 

Kim: It’s all in the details. When you look at the all-black trims offered by other brands, you will notice they allow flexibility in some interior and exterior colors, which causes the black areas to stand out like accessories. In contrast, every element of a Genesis Black model, big or small, is uniformly black. Just pure black. This creates a harmonious blend that underscores black’s elegance. 

How small of a detail are we talking about here? 

Kim: Not just the Crest Grille, wheels, emblem, wood garnishes and door steps, but even the tiny buttons and switches were all developed as Genesis Black-exclusive details that required changes in our manufacturing methods. Even the Bang & Olufson logos on the speakers were made in a darker shade. 

Looking back, what was the hardest part of the development process? 

Ryu: Creating an all-black trim doesn’t mean we simply grabbed a paintbrush and colored everything in one stroke. We had to experiment with dozens of black variations for each material, carefully considering how they interact with light. We then tested how these materials looked in conjunction with other components and the overall ambiance they created. For example, when we were working on the Black Ash Real Wood Trim, we went through endless rounds of sampling processes to create the natural mix of black and wood patterns. We ultimately ended up applying a subtle brass color to the wood grain area to enhance the luxury feel of the wood while ensuring it matched with the surrounding elements. 

Kim: Considering how each vehicle contains tens of thousands of parts, changing just one — even its color — prompts a chain of questions we have to investigate and think through, like how they will affect operations on the factory line. 

Genesis Black also marks the first time the brand used recycled materials. How did that go? 

Ryu: As a brand, we’re all about finding interesting new materials that would elevate the driving experience. For Genesis Black, we used recycled materials and natural substances that require special manufacturing processes. For instance, the seats in Genesis Black models use carbon black powder extracted from discarded tires. Some of the dyes and oils used in the leather dyeing process have been replaced with pine bark and flaxseed oil. About 20 percent of the yarn used in the car floor carpets is made from recycled nylon derived from discarded fishing nets, while the floor mats incorporate modal fiber sourced from beechwood.

It's been about a year since the first Genesis Black model — the Genesis G90 Black — was released in Korea. How have customers responded so far? 

Kim: The G90, which was already popular in black, has become even more favored with the all-black theme. With the G90 Black, we aimed to attract a younger demographic compared to the traditional G90, and sales figures indicate we have successfully achieved this goal. 

Before we go, how do you hope customers will connect with Genesis Black? 

Oh: We hope our customers take pride in owning a Genesis Black. We want them to feel so connected to their vehicle that whenever they mention they drive a Genesis to their friends or family, they highlight one additional detail: that it’s a Genesis Black.

On Oct. 2, Genesis added two more models to its Genesis Black lineup, the GV80 Black and the GV80 Coupe Black, presenting an all-black finish that permeates every intricate detail with refinement.

The first-ever redesign of the Genesis GV70 was launched in Korea on May 8, completed with a more refined silhouette and enhanced product appeal.

Research engineers from the Namyang R&D Center gathered with local media in June, a month after the redesigned Genesis GV70 was launched in Korea, to introduce the host of enhancements in ride and handling. 

9. GENESIS LAUNCHES TRACK TAXI NORDSCHLEIFE PROGRAM AT NÜRBURGRING

The Genesis Track Taxi Nordschleife program was launched at the world-famous Nürburgring in Germany on June 18, offering passenger rides in a specially modified Genesis G70, dubbed the G70 Track Taxi Nordschleife.

10. INSIDE THE REDESIGNED GENESIS GV70: NOISE, VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS

The June tech event with research engineers from the Namyang R&D Center on the redesigned GV70 also touched upon the model’s noise, vibration and harshness improvements. 

Here’s how they stand out from their base models. 

The Purest Black

Both the GV80 Black and the GV80 Coupe Black confidently removed their model names and trim emblems in the rear, replacing them with dark-metallic “GENESIS” lettering. The harmonious integration of exterior decoration elements under the black tone and manner not only redirects attention to Genesis’ signature arch-type Parabolic Line sweeping across the voluminous body but also enhances the delivery of “Athletic Elegance," the brand's design philosophy.

Inside the cabins, the interior materials, each with unique textures and light reflectance, are expertly combined in black, delivering peace, comfort and tranquility. Behind this harmony stands Genesis’ rigorous efforts and advanced technology to coordinate the different shades of black — a color that, by nature, absorbs light differently by materials.

The GV80 Black and the GV80 Coupe Black feature interior designs that enhance their exclusivity, including real wood garnishes and quilted leather seats, which are accentuated by black suede materials, black aluminum speaker grilles and black door steps. 

To promote the virtuous cycle of resources, the leather seats, door trims and quilted rear seats have all been dyed with recycled carbon black extracted from waste tires. 

The distinctive black accents of Genesis Black are even applied to smaller details like switches, the shift-by-wire (SBW) system and Smart Key.

2025 GV80, GV80 Coupe: Elevated Ride Comfort 

Aside from the Genesis Black models, both the GV80 and GV80 Coupe have undergone product upgrades for the 2025 model year. 

The most significant change in the 2025 GV80 and GV80 Coupe is the improved ride comfort, due largely to the application of a new type of hydro bushings in the front suspension, dubbed “Hydro G-Bushing.” The hydro bushings minimize vibrations and jolts on the road, providing a much more serene driving experience than before. 

Hydro G-Bushings, which have been applied to the rear suspensions of the GV80 and the GV80 Coupe since 2023, encapsulate fluid within the bushings to create flow paths that absorb external vibrations more effectively. This results in greater damping force against specific frequencies (vibrations) compared to conventional rubber bushings, leading to better ride comfort. 

Another notable upgrade of the 2025 GV80 and GV80 Coupe is the refined emotional quality, evident through the integration of sophisticated Genesis-specific alert sounds in advanced driver assistance systems such as Parking Distance Warning (PDW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW). 

The expanded use of leather on the lower trim of the B-pillar further emphasizes the brand’s commitment to luxurious details. 

In terms of convenience, the Digital Key 2 now allows access to both the front and rear doors, boosting practicality in various scenarios, such as unlocking the door to retrieve items from the back seat or permitting a rear passenger to enter first when the door is locked.

Understanding e-LSD begins with grasping the concept of LSD. In a typical setup, power generated by the engine is transmitted to the wheels through the transmission and driveshaft. On straight roads, both the left and right wheels generally rotate at the same speed. 

However, when facing off-road conditions such as sand, mud or water, the circumstances could change swiftly. If one wheel of the axle gets stuck while the other remains unaffected, a difference in rotational speeds occurs. 

A similar situation arises when turning corners. The outer wheel typically covers a greater distance than the inner wheel due to the larger turning radius. This is why a differential gear is needed to distribute power differently to the left and right drive wheels. 

When turning a corner without a differential gear, the left and right wheels would rotate at the same speed, creating resistance on the outer wheel and thus increasing the risk of losing control of the vehicle. 

But a differential alone is barely sufficient. 

The differential transfers power based on the rotational speed difference between the drive wheels, meaning that power tends to concentrate on the wheel with less traction. That added power can lead the wheel to slip and spin, rather than gain the necessary traction to move forward. With the opposite wheel receiving little to no power, the chances of getting stuck increases significantly. 

This is where LSD comes in. 

As the name suggests, LSD prevents power from being excessively transferred to a wheel that’s slipping or spinning, ensuring that both the left and right wheels maintain adequate drive power and traction. 

Electronic Vs. Mechanical LSD 

Among the two main types of LSD, the all-wheel drive GV80 offers the optional electronic LSD, known as e-LSD. 

The other type of LSD, called the mechanical LSD (m-LSD), utilizes clutch plates to mechanically control power distribution to both wheels. While m-LSD provides fairly effective power distribution, it only engages when a certain level of difference is detected between the two wheels, meaning that it’s reactive in nature. 

In contrast, e-LSD uses electronically controlled clutches to proactively manage the difference in rotations between wheels. In other words, it detects terrain conditions and engages preemptively, allowing for smoother driving than the m-LSD. 

The e-LSD system of the all-wheel drive GV80, which is equipped in the rear axle, boasts one of the fastest response times in the industry. Using hydraulic actuators, it detects minute pressure changes in the vehicle based on road conditions and driving situations, distributing optimal power to the left and right rear wheels in less than a tenth of a second. 

Terrain Mode 

When it comes to truly conquering off-road terrain, the GV80’s combination of the all-wheel drive system, e-LSD and Terrain Mode ensures maximum control and performance. 

In Terrain Mode, the e-LSD works in conjunction with the engine control unit (ECU), transmission control unit (TCU) and traction control system (TCS) to optimize the vehicle’s off-road capabilities. 

While the e-LSD regulates power distribution between the rear wheels, the TCS oversees traction control for the front wheels. 

The Terrain Mode offers three settings: mud, sand and snow. 

Under Snow Mode, for example, the GV80’s engine, transmission and four-wheel drive system are all finely tuned to prevent excessive force from reaching the wheels and causing them to slip.

In Mud Mode, the GV80 utilizes its powerful engine to deliver a momentary strong force to all four wheels, effectively allowing the vehicle to quickly escape from muddy terrain.

In Sand Mode, the drivetrain is meticulously controlled to smoothly transmit engine power to all four wheels, maintaining a 50-to-50 distribution of power between the front and rear wheels. This balanced distribution helps prevent the wheels from getting stuck in the sand.

The result is a four-wheel drive system that allows the GV80 to navigate off-road terrain with ease and confidence.

SEOUL, Oct. 2, 2024 — Genesis today unveiled the GV80 Black and the GV80 Coupe Black, presenting an all-black finish that permeates every intricate detail with sophistication and refinement. 

It’s the second time Genesis has released a Black model, following the successful launch of the G90 Black in Korea last March. 

Genesis Black models are defined by their captivating dark-black color theme that extends throughout the interior and exterior, flawlessly embodying the essence of Genesis’ design philosophy “Athletic Elegance” in its purest form. 

All visible exterior features in the GV80 Black and the GV80 Coupe Black are finished in black, including the radiator grille, bumper garnish, front emblem, daylight opening (DLO) molding, roof racks and rear bumper molding. Even lesser visible details like the headlamp inner side bezels are black, completing the sleek look. 

Both SUV models come standard with 22-inch glossy black wheels and black floating center caps, the latter of which are exclusive to Genesis Black vehicles. The tailgate is adorned solely with the Genesis emblem in dark metallic lettering, adding the finishing touch to their unique presence. 

The interior is characterized by consistent black accents throughout, with distinctive materials further enhancing the sense of tranquillity. 

Black finishes are applied to various interior elements such as knobs, switches and glass accents of the shift-by-wire (SBW) system, as well as the leather stitching and button that opens the glove compartment. Enhancing the luxurious appeal are real wood garnish, exquisitely quilted seat leather with piping, as well as premium car mats.

As a sportier alternative to the GV80, the GV80 Coupe offers three powertrain options, all based on gasoline: a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine that makes 304 horsepower; and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 380 horsepower, while the same engine coupled with a 48-volt electric supercharger (e-supercharger) spikes its output to a higher 415 horsepower. 

Available only in the GV80 Coupe and Genesis’ flagship sedan G90, the e-supercharger stands out as a defining feature that simply cannot be overlooked. 

How It Works 

While the e-supercharger in the G90 focuses on providing smooth and comfortable rides, the one set aside for the GV80 Coupe has been specifically tuned to provide rapid response and acceleration. 

When compared with the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine, the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine mounted with an e-supercharger incorporates a 48-volt mild hybrid starter-generator (MHSG) along with a 48-volt e-supercharger, which together provide more power assistance, improve low-end turbo lag, enhance responsiveness and increase fuel efficiency. 

To boost maximum output, the capacity of the turbochargers installed on each side of the engine with an e-supercharger has been increased, while in relation to this upgrade, the water-cooled intercooler capacity has been improved to enhance cooling performance and responsiveness. 

In addition to assisting power, the 48-volt MHSG performs the role of recharging the 48-volt lithium battery during regenerative braking, all the while functioning as a generator and starter motor.

A key feature of the e-supercharger-assisted engine is that its two-stage boosting system ensures responsiveness at low engine speeds. 

Typically, a turbocharger uses exhaust gas to spin the turbine following combustion in the engine, which then drives a compressor wheel to compress air into the engine, increasing output. Enhancing the turbocharger’s capacity can increase airflow and ultimately boost maximum output, but this normally leads to longer compression times. Therefore, when the engine is under load or operating at low speeds, it can cause a delay in acceleration or slower throttle response. 

The 48-volt e-supercharger, however, addresses these drawbacks by activating at speeds below 1,750 revolutions per minute. It compresses air behind the compressor wheel and delivers it to the engine, increasing low-end output and reducing turbo lag. When the engine reaches higher revolutions per minute, where the turbochargers alone are adequate for boosting, the air bypasses the e-supercharger and is directly supplied to the engine intake manifold. 

Airflow is controlled by the mechanical bypass valve. It has a spring inside that opens and closes the air path based on a steady difference in air pressure, which prevents sudden fluctuations in air supply to the engine when the e-supercharger is activated. 

Unlike a regular 12-volt e-supercharger found in traditional engines, a 48-volt system can deliver a significant amount of air to boost engine output. Another advantage of the 48-volt e-supercharger is that it’s powered by an electric motor, making it more efficient than traditional mechanical superchargers that rely on engine power. 

Thrilling Driving Pleasure 

The e-supercharger-boosted engine not only increases maximum power and torque compared to the standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, but also alters the way power is delivered. The stark difference is evident when comparing torque and power graphs of both engine types. 

While both engines reach peak torque at 1,300 revolutions per minute, the torque graph of the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 rises sharply before that, resulting in a subtle fluctuation in output. Whereas with the other type of engine, because the e-supercharger assists the engine at lower revolutions per minute, it reaches peak torque more smoothly, and the torque decline after 4,500 revolutions per minute is more gradual.

When switching to Sport Plus Mode, the e-supercharger-assisted engine provides a more aggressive control over the output and torque, giving a strong push feel when shifting up gears and automatically adjusting the revs when downshifting. A newly added launch control feature maximizes acceleration from a standstill. 

To complement the improved engine performance, the running performance has also been refined. The damper tuning that supports the vehicle’s chassis has been modified to reduce rolling and pitching movements, allowing for better control of the vehicle. The steering system has been fine-tuned as well to enhance steering stability. The enhanced exhaust sounds add an extra level of excitement to the overall driving sensation.

Improved Fuel Efficiency 

The GV80 Coupe’s e-supercharger-equipped engine also offers improved fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions, chiefly thanks to the MHSG. The MHSG performs the role of a starter motor, turning the engine crankshaft as soon as the engine is started. With higher output than a conventional starter motor, it provides excellent startability. Its connection to the engine via a belt further allows for effective reduction of vibrations and noise. 

During steady driving, the MHSG uses power from the 48-volt lithium battery to supply the needed energy to the drivetrain system. During deceleration, the MHSG performs regenerative braking, collecting energy back into the 48-volt battery.

During inertial driving, when the accelerator pedal is not pressed and the vehicle is coming to a stop, the MHSG system engages the Extended Idle Stop & Go (ISG) function, which cuts off fuel injection to the engine — a stark contrast to the conventional ISG, which only operates when the vehicle is completely stopped. 

Compared to the turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, the e-supercharger-boosted engine matched with 22-inch wheels offers a 3.85-percent improvement in fuel efficiency (0.3 kilometers per liter) and a 3.64-percent reduction in carbon emissions (8 grams).

Exterior: SUV Meets Sporty

The GV80 Coupe boldly combines Genesis’ design identity “Athletic Elegance” with dynamic styling cues. The aggressively trimmed front bumper features an expanded air intake, Two-Line headlamps incorporating Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology and a double-layered G-Matrix Crest Grille. The electronic supercharger (e-supercharger) option of the GV80 Coupe exclusively comes with dark chrome garnish, elevating the coupe’s high-performance image.

The side profile is characterized by an arch-shaped Parabolic Line that flows along the body and meets a sloping roofline that descends from the C-pillar to the trunk, striking a perfect harmony. The GV80 Coupe seizes attention with coupe-exclusive 20- and 22-inch wheels with distinctive spokes. Depending on the type of engine, the color of the brake calipers also varies: the e-supercharged coupe boasts vibrant red calipers, and the others black.

At the rear, the model flaunts a unique design with LED surface-emitting rear combination lamps and either twin-type or single-type exhaust tips. The type of exhaust tip is determined by the engine type.

The GV80 Coupe is available in a range of 13 exterior color options, including the coupe-exclusive “Bering Blue.” 

Interior: Refined Yet Exciting Touches 

The interior of the GV80 Coupe captures a high-tech sensibility with sporty design elements unique to a coupe. 

Along with the 27-inch OLED display and seamless center fascia, another standout feature are the three-spoke D-cut steering wheel and the three garnishing options that contribute to the model’s refined look, offered only in the coupe: Spin-Patterned Aluminum, Black Newspaper Real Wood and Real Carbon. Also equipped solely in the e-supercharged coupe are G-Matrix-inspired metal accents that are added to the pedals, which further enhance the exhilarating driving experience. 

E-Supercharger 

The GV80 Coupe presents three different powertrain options, all based on gasoline and combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission: a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine that delivers 304 horsepower; and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 380 horsepower, while the same engine coupled with a 48-volt e-supercharger spikes its output to a higher 415 horsepower. 

The coupe is the only Genesis SUV that offers an e-supercharger, second only to the Genesis G90 in the entire lineup. The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 assisted with an e-supercharger contains two turbochargers, one in each cylinder bank. Each cylinder bank consists of three cylinders, arranged in a V-shaped configuration. 

A major benefit of the e-supercharger is that it compresses air behind the compressor wheel and delivers it to the engine, increasing low-end output and reducing turbo lag. The engine further benefits from dual continuous variable valve timing (CVVT), an integrated exhaust manifold, integrated flow control valve, center injection and a water-cooled intercooler, which together optimize fuel efficiency and acceleration response to produce a maximum output of 415 horsepower and a peak torque of 56 kilogram-meters. 

Adrenaline Boosters 

Not only does the engine deliver impressive power, but it’s also complemented by a high-performance braking system as standard, which comes as optional in the Genesis GV80. This includes large discs that fully cover the wheels and four-piston 20-inch monoblock calipers, ensuring strong performance and reliable braking capabilities. 

A brake mode called Flex Brake is also available in the GV80 Coupe, which offers two settings: Comfort and Sport, allowing the driver to experience different braking sensations depending on the selected mode. For instance, setting the braking system to Sport Mode via the display alters the brake pedal response and stroke, resulting in a more engaging driving experience. 

Other exclusive highlights of the GV80 Coupe include Active Sound Design (ASD), which combines real engine sounds with virtual sounds, creating an immersive auditory experience that amplifies the model’s powerful performance. 

Specially set aside for the e-supercharger option is a high-performance gauge cluster, which conveniently provides drivers with essential information for sports driving, such as oil temperature, torque usage and turbo boost pressure.

Sanghyun Park won last year’s championship, winning a 300 million won ($220,000) cash prize, the Genesis GV80 Coupe and a ticket to compete at the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open.

Newly Designed Electrified G80 Makes Debut 

The newly designed Electrified G80 was unveiled in a new blue color exclusive to the Chinese market. Inspired by the Chinese saying that “the color blue is richer than its indigo origin,” this new two-toned color, named Vision Blue, is derived from the noble blue color in Chinese culture and reinterpreted with Genesis’s unique aesthetics. 

The Electrified G80 illustrates the progression of Genesis’ EV design. Its dignified front face features the brand's iconic G-Matrix Crest Grille with MLA headlamps and a refined bumper, portraying a stance of confidence. The vehicle’s elongated wheelbase, which has been increased by 130 millimeters, adds to the sense of elegance and closely resembles the side profile and daylight opening (DLO) of the brand’s flagship model, the Genesis G90. 

Together with the brand’s signature Parabolic Lines flowing over the new dish-style 19-inch wheels, the chrome garnish that envelopes the front, side, and rear further elevates the overall look of the vehicle. Befitting a luxury EV, the charging port cover has also been upgraded to open and close electronically. 

As for the interior, the Electrified G80’s longer wheelbase not only offers more space in the second row, but brings with it a myriad of new features that are designed to enhance passenger comfort. After entering through the easy-close door, passengers can settle into reclining VIP seats with leg rests in privacy behind a rear-window curtain. The Ergo Motion Seats and Integrated Memory System (IMS) in the second row are also new features that are not found in its predecessor. 

The interior is further upgraded with the quilted garnish newly added to the second-row door. The vehicle’s cabin offers personalized entertainment for relaxation and work with a 27-inch OLED display, as well as a 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. Driving comfort is further elevated thanks to improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction, adding to the experience of effortless luxury. 

Genesis Magma Program Arrives in China 

Genesis also introduced its Magma program in China with the world premiere of the G80 EV Magma Concept, also in a China-exclusive “Acme Blue” color, in addition to showcasing its X Gran Berlinetta Concept and the GV60 Magma Concept. 

The Genesis Magma program infuses the brand with a new dynamism and marks Genesis’ exciting entry into the realm of high-performance vehicles. Through Magma, Genesis endeavors to redefine the boundaries of performance and luxury, with the ultimate aim of developing a high-performance Magma variant for each existing model in the Genesis lineup. 

G80 EV Magma Concept 

“The introduction of Genesis Magma to China signifies our expansion into a new frontier of the driving experience,” said SangYup Lee, Head of Genesis Global Design. “The G80 EV Magma Concept unveiled today is a stunning expression of both our design and engineering capabilities, as well as our commitment to meet the ever-evolving needs of Chinese consumers in pursuit of ultimate performance, represented by the beautiful and China-exclusive Acme Blue.” 

One of the standout features of the G80 EV Magma Concept is the China-exclusive Acme Blue color. Inspired by the blue flames that are known to burn at the highest temperature range, this unique color symbolizes the dedication to China’s continuous progress and advancement while also signifying the ever-evolving nature of the brand's Magma program. 

Building on the success of the GV60 Magma Concept, the G80 EV Magma Concept marks the second electric vehicle model in the Magma program. True to the Genesis ethos, this concept highlights a more athletic aspect compared to the Electrified G80, perfectly embodying power, performance, and style. 

In terms of design, the G80 EV Magma Concept features various enhancements. The front grille has been redesigned, offering a more striking appearance. Wider fenders and a new rear bumper give the vehicle a more commanding presence on the road. The wider body and lowered ride height are complemented by 21-inch wheels, which are wider at the rear. 

The rear bumper is adorned with an integrated fog lamp, reminiscent of iconic racing cars, while a sculpted trunklid and pronounced spoiler lip contribute to improved aerodynamics. The rear diffuser and ducktail spoiler work together to optimize the flow of air, further enhancing the vehicle's overall performance. 

Performance is a key element of the G80 EV Magma Concept, with various enhancements implemented. The use of an advanced suspension system, high-performance wheels, and large, ventilated front and rear brakes significantly enhance the vehicle's capabilities. 

The wider track, tuned suspension for elevated road-holding and cornering potential, and larger brakes ensure excellent handling and increased driver confidence. Keeping in mind the importance of weight management, the lightweight wheels have been optimized to cool the brakes while reducing unsprung weight. 

The interior of the G80 EV Magma Concept is crafted with Alcantara, quilted leather, and carbon fiber inserts featuring a blue-colored weave. 

GV60 Magma Concept 

First introduced last month at Genesis House New York, the GV60 Magma Concept elevates the design and performance of the existing GV60 — Genesis’ first dedicated EV model — with improved battery and motor technology. The concept car is the first step toward creating a deeper emotional connection between the driver and the vehicle. 

The GV60 Magma Concept’s exterior design harmonizes aesthetics with considerations for chassis, aerodynamics and thermodynamics. To enhance stability during sporty driving, the car has been widened and lowered, giving it a more dynamic stance and allowing for a lower center of gravity. 

The GV60 Magma Concept’s distinctive exterior design extends into the luxurious and sporty interior. It features elements including bucket seats with body-colored seatbacks, upholstered in nappa and suede leather featuring double-diamond stitching patterns in Magma’s iconic orange color and titanium grey. 

The X Gran Berlinetta Concept 

The X Gran Berlinetta Concept, first unveiled in Barcelona last December, was born from a design study that demonstrates Genesis’ passion and intent for the Vision Gran Turismo series. 

The X Gran Berlinetta Concept’s design language is pure and muscular with volumes centered around the wheels. Its design orchestrates the cab backwards proportions with Genesis’ typical anti-wedge attitude that is structured around a virtual parabolical tensioned theory, which is common to the Genesis model lineup. The package design maximizes the dash-to-axle ratio while moving the driver and powertrain rearward for a lean mid-engine layout. 

GV80 Coupe and Redesigned GV80 Begin Sales 

The GV80 Coupe marks the brand’s expansion into the luxury coupe SUV segment, bringing together extraordinary design and exceptional performance. The GV80 Coupe embodies the ideal luxury coupe SUV’s balance of sportiness and practicality, offering a unique luxury experience tailored for young Chinese consumers. 

The GV80 Coupe carries the brand’s characteristic “Athletic Elegance” design philosophy with a double-layered Crest Grille and Parabolic Line spanning the body, while an integrated roof rack and slender roof lines create a dynamic side profile. 

It also delivers exhilarating performance, coming standard with a 2.5-liter turbo engine, as well as the Flex Brake functionality for a confident and tailored driving experience. 

The newly designed GV80 has undergone both interior and exterior design upgrades to further elevate the model’s level of luxury, along with numerous comfort-oriented enhancements. 

A newly designed Two-Line Crest Grille gives the front face a more modern aesthetic, while upgrades to the center console and display underscore Genesis’s commitment to blending state-of-the-art technology and elegant design. 

The newly designed GV80 also incorporates myriad enhancements to the user experience, including a new fingerprint authentication system that enables vehicle start without the need for a smart key. Its newly upgraded Genesis Active Safety Control system with numerous advanced driver-assistance features, also provides a safer, more comfortable driving experience.

The story behind “Bering Blue” runs even deeper. As the key color of the new GV80 Coupe, exclusive to Genesis’ first coupe-type SUV, it embodies bold challenges and resilience to conquer them — a reflection of the journey that has brought the brand to its present stature. 

Taeksung Nam, head of the Genesis CMF (color, material and finish) Development Team, shares the years-long development process of Bering Blue and the rationale behind giving exterior colors such distinct names. 

What inspired the name Bering Blue? 

Bering Blue was named after the Bering Strait. It’s theoretically the only location where people can walk [between Russia and the United States] when frozen, as demonstrated by a Korean expedition team [in 2012]. I was the one who suggested the name for the color because I hoped it would convey a story of exploration, much like the treacherous voyage across the ice bridge.

What about the color? How did it become the signature color of the newly released GV80 Coupe? 

We wanted to position the GV80 Coupe in the market as a sportier model than the GV80. While most brands typically associate sportiness with the color red, we wanted to redefine the concept of sportiness while maintaining the inherent luxury of Genesis. It was critical to develop a color that’s elegant, yet not too flashy. That’s how we settled on blue — but not just any blue; a trendy, captivatingly enigmatic blue.

I’m sure there were other elements, like interior materials, that your team considered when developing Bering Blue. 

Exterior colors can significantly change under sunlight based on the pigments used. With Bering Blue, our intention was to give it an elegant grayish-blue glow that was neither entirely blue nor entirely gray. There was also another shade of blue ["Ultra Marine Blue"] we created for the GV80 Coupe interior, so we hoped both colors would be a good match for each other when paired together.

Why are Genesis exterior colors named after specific locations like the Bering Strait? 

In the past, the same colors went by different names in Korea and overseas, which caused the original design concept to get lost across borders. This prompted us to gather naming suggestions from our regional offices [in foreign countries] and select one as the universal name. Today, once we develop a color, our designers share the entire story behind its creation with their regional counterparts, who then suggest cities or regions they think align with the color’s essence.

How are colors usually developed?  

We extensively talk with our exterior designers about the car’s body shape and whether we want to give it a majestic or sleek feel. Those discussions culminate in what we call a style concept. In line with these concepts, we then suggest color concepts, select a specific color palette, and generate numerous color variations. We also experiment with particle sizes to see how they complement the [model’s overall] style. We ultimately settle on a single color after exploring countless candidates. 
 

How long does that whole process take?  

It involves around two years of planning, followed by two years of modeling, and then another year for mass production preparations, totaling five years. Within this timeframe, I’d say we’re the busiest for a year, starting from the point we finalize the style concept.

Other than Bering Blue, what colors do you think effectively capture the essence of the model you sought to convey? 

Most customers lean toward achromatic colors, but that's not always the case. One of our most popular chromatic colors was “Tasman Blue” for the G80 — a not-too-blue, not-too-green hue developed by one of our designers who drew inspiration from an aurora in the night sky of New Zealand. Sales were unusually high for this one. Another chromatic color that sold well was “Cardiff Green.” Green is normally considered forbidden grounds for color designers because they hardly gain widespread success, but Cardiff Green beat all odds and was well-received by GV80 customers for its refined touch.

How do market trends influence color development when the majority of people prefer achromatic colors? 

In Korea, black and white dominate as the most popular exterior colors. White usually takes the lead overseas, though some prefer chromatic colors like blue in North America, our main target market. Looking at the sales data, it hit us: Why not expand our range of white and black options to offer more choices to our customers? So came “Vik Black,” a pure black with a vibrant shimmer brought to life by particles called “Black Diamond Pearl.” “Maui Black” is pure, solid black. To enhance the luxurious feel, Maui Black is coated with an additional clear layer, which provides the color with an increased sense of depth, setting it apart from the typical solid black colors used in other mass brands. We then set out to explore matte finishes and started offering a few colors in both glossy and matte options.

What makes Genesis colors so unique compared to other luxury brands? 

When Genesis started [in 2015], we didn’t have much of a standard for developing luxurious colors. As a CMF designer, I wanted to create that standard entirely on our own. My goal was to hit market success with colors created from our original ideas — no references, no peeking at competitors. I always wondered if colors created by Koreans would be seen as luxurious by foreigners, and I’m happy to know it’s indeed possible.

It’s interesting that you mention gaining global recognition with homegrown colors. 

I think all the hype around Korea and Korean brands has played a role in the positive reception of Korean colors in the market. During my countless travels worldwide, I’ve come to realize that Korean palettes aren’t tacky at all; they can achieve global success, as we’re witnessing today with Genesis.

I would also think that the quality of paint is just as important as the color. Is there a special technology for that at Genesis? 

The Paint Manufacturing Engineering Team ensures the quality of our paint, and they do outstanding work. We use something called “2K clear [coat],” which enhances the hardness and quality of the top paint layer to prevent it from resembling an orange peel.

An orange peel? Like rough and uneven? 

Exactly. All cars have it. The key is to level out the paint as much as possible, and we’ve managed to make significant strides in this technology. A few years back, we invited paint experts with some 30 years of experience to conduct a blind test against our competing brands, and even we were shocked to see that we received the highest score.

Looking ahead, how do you intend to keep the momentum in color development going? 

It’s really simple. As I mentioned before, the color development process spans up to five years. But sales also extend over a significant period. Once a new model is out, it remains on the market for three to four years, [usually] in the same colors as it was launched. This means we have to plan nearly a decade ahead while anticipating that the colors maintain their current chic appeal. What’s so tricky about this is that it requires technological advancement. Car paint isn’t solely about the color; it involves various substances like pigments and pearls, all of which need to progress in tandem.

SEOUL, Sept. 27, 2023 — Genesis unveiled the GV80 Coupe and the redesigned GV80 at an exclusive event held at Genesis Suji in Korea on Tuesday, marking its debut in the coupe SUV segment. 

The GV80, Genesis’ inaugural SUV that blends luxury aesthetics with cutting-edge technology, has achieved impressive sales figures of over 170,000 units in the global luxury SUV market since its debut in January 2020. 

The enhanced GV80 brings the first model change in over three years, featuring the distinct signature of the base model with a comprehensive interior redesign. The model promises an elevated in-car experience with new convenience features for comfort and safety. 

The brand-new luxury GV80 Coupe embodies Genesis' design philosophy of “Athletic Elegance.” 

Garnering worldwide attention since the reveal of the GV80 Coupe Concept in April, the GV80 Coupe effortlessly maximizes practicality and sportiness with a distinctive design package, encompassing a dynamic exterior and a sporty, high-tech interior, complemented by a 3.5-liter gasoline turbo 48V electric supercharger (e-S/C) engine. 

"Today, we mark an important milestone in our journey to success,” Chief Brand Officer of Genesis, Graeme Russell, said during the premiere event. “As the boundaries of luxury continue to be redefined, Genesis believes that the GV80 and GV80 Coupe will cater to the ever-evolving needs of our discerning customers.” 

GV80: Refined and Robust Exterior

The redesigned GV80 adds luxurious details to the existing model, elevating the experience for drivers and passengers of the GV80. 

The GV80’s front includes a newly designed Two-Line Crest Grille and the signature Two-Line headlamps. The Crest Grille refines the model’s elegance with smoother corner lines, and the sleek design of the Two-Line headlamps, made possible with MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology[1], underscores Genesis’ commitment to the harmonization of state-of the-art technology and design excellence. 

The GV80's robust and athletic SUV persona is accentuated with design elements such as larger air intakes and a wide skid plate on the front bumper, while the Guilloché-patterned[2] emblem adds an elegant finishing touch to the luxury SUV image. 

Along the exterior, a new chrome trim extends seamlessly through the sides, exuding a powerful presence from the front to rear bumper. 

Two reinvented wheel designs contribute to the GV80’s solid and refined character. The 20-inch design creates a multi-spoke look by intersecting two different spokes with distinct finishings, and the 22-inch option reinterprets the Two-Line design. 

At the rear, the muffler tips hidden in the bumper elevate the GV80’s sophistication. Key elements of the Genesis design language add to the model’s futuristic image with distinctive V-shape chrome trim inspired by the iconic Crest Grille. The lower part of the bumper imparts a sense of stability with its bold body-colored line.

GV80: Elegant Interior With High-Tech Sensibility in ‘Beauty of White Space’

The interior of the GV80 is designed to elevate customers’ daily lives by offering an in-car luxury experience. 

The interior brings to life Genesis’ design ethos of the uniquely Korean concept of the Beauty of White Space, incorporating cutting-edge technology to create a sophisticated ambiance. A 27-inch-wide OLED display integrates the cluster and the AVN (Audio, Video, Navigation) screen, exemplifying the harmony in the combination of a high-tech device with luxurious details with its horizontal layout. 

Seamless design extends to the center fascia, and the touch-based HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system thoughtfully offers drivers with ease of control. 

The redesigned crystal-like Shift By Wire (SBW) ensures a comfortable grip and the adds a sense of luxury. 

Quality materials and design enhancements add to the GV80’s overall elegance, with elements comprising of horn covers with the new Genesis emblem, two-tone-colored steering wheels, an improved pedal design, and crash pads and a center console featuring leather, aluminum, and real wood. 

Furthermore, Genesis has accommodated consumer needs with a redesigned wireless smartphone charging tray that enables more convenient charging and provides improved visibility of the phone while it's charging, an enlarged console cup holder, and a knob-type volume/tune adjustment button. 

The GV80 comes in a choice of five interior colors, including three new additions: Earth Brown, Bordeaux Brown, and Glacier White. 

GV80 Coupe: Practicality and Sportiness Meet to Define Athletic Elegance 

The highly anticipated unveiling of the GV80 Coupe adds a new facet to the Genesis brand, emphasizing a fusion of practicality and sportiness to accommodate any driving lifestyle. 

The GV80 Coupe combines the practicality of an SUV, inheriting the design and performance of the base model, with the dynamism of a coupe. The introduction of the GV80 Coupe reaffirms Genesis’ unwavering commitment to delivering cars with exceptional performance and emotional appeal. 

The exterior creates a high-performance image, boasting an elegant yet daring silhouette, featuring the MLA-powered LED headlamps and double-layered Crest Grille like the redesigned GV80. 

The front design is further accentuated with an expanded air intake, Active Air Flap, and four air vents, which improve engine cooling while also contributing to the coupe SUV's bold appeal. 

When viewed from the side, the arch-shaped Parabolic Line spanning the body and the low, sloping roofline strike a perfect harmony, completing the strong and dynamic exterior design. Adding to its sporty profile, the GV80 Coupe grabs attention with Coupe-exclusive 20- and 22-inch wheels with distinctive spokes. 

At the rear, the GV80 Coupe features a unique design with LED surface-emitting rear combination lamps and a wide integrated auxiliary brake light on the tailgate. A centrally descending rear spoiler adds a sporty touch. 

The GV80 Coupe is available in a range of 13 exterior color options, including the exclusive Bering Blue. 

GV80 Coupe: Coupe-Specific Sporty Design Package and Ample Space 

The interior of the GV80 Coupe captures a sporty sensibility with a design unique to a coupe. 

The two-tone D-cut steering wheel reinforces its driving dynamics and maintains an elegant interior image. Unique carbon garnish patterns and seats with the coupe-exclusive patterns and stitching further contribute to the refined design. 

To minimize the risk of slipping during operation and to maximize high-performance sensibility, metal accents were added on the brake and accelerator pedals[3]. 
Additionally, the GV80 Coupe has optimized the layout of the engine room and chassis and incorporated rear seat reclining functionality to provide a spacious interior. An optimized trunk package and a foldable luggage shelf offer ample space and storage capacity. 

The GV80 Coupe allows customers to personalize unique interior spaces, offering a selection of six coupe-specific interior packages. 

Outstanding Power Performance With 3.5 Turbo 48V Electric Supercharger 

The GV80 is equipped with two powertrain options: a gasoline 2.5 turbo engine, which delivers a robust 304 horsepower and 43.0 kgf·m of torque, and a gasoline 3.5 turbo engine, which produces a maximum output of 380 horsepower and 54.0 kgf·m of torque. The GV80 Coupe offers three powertrain choices, including the gasoline 3.5 turbo 48V electric supercharger (e-S/C), which features a robust 415 horsepower and 56.0 kgf·m. 

This innovative engine compresses air twice – once through the motor in the low engine (rpm) range and again through the 3.5T e-S/C – to advance the maximum torque and improving acceleration response at low and medium speeds. 

The GV80 and GV80 Coupe both include advanced driving technologies to provide drivers and passengers with driving stability and a smooth riding experience in any driving environment. Preview Electronic Control Suspension (Pre-view ECS) optimizes control of the suspension by anticipating road conditions, and the second-generation Engine Mounting Control Unit (EMCU) detects road surfaces to reduce driving vibrations. Additionally, crosswind stabilization assists drivers with high-speed driving during strong wind conditions, and Auto Terrain Mode utilizes AI to assess road conditions and automatically adjusts to the appropriate driving mode. 

Genesis has achieved best-in-class tranquility, boasting quiet serenity by incorporating noise-absorbing tires, materials, and improving the soundproofing of the tailgate. 

In the GV80 Coupe, drivers can replicate the sound of a large-displacement sports coupe's exhaust with Active Sound Design, and allow brake pedal responsiveness customization with Flex Brake feature. 

Genesis has introduced additional functions exclusively for the 3.5T e-S/C model, including Sport+ driving mode, Launch Control, and a cluster that displays oil temperature, torque, and turbo pressure, engaging drivers with a more agile and dynamic experience in the car. 

Improved Customer Safety and Convenience Features 

Genesis has given the newly released GV80 and GV80 Coupe various cutting-edge technologies to offer improved convenience and safety features, enriching the driving experience from departure to arrival. 

Independently controlled temperature mode bestows maximum comfort for air-conditioning and airflow from four separate areas, including the driver’s seat, passenger seat, and the second and third rows. 

The cars come with an array of convenience features, including Digital Key 2, Fingerprint Authentication System, UVC disinfection trays, heated armrests, touch-based handle sensors, and a fragrance system that disperses pleasing scents throughout the car’s interior. Other notable additions include a 14.6-inch rear-seat display for streaming services and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. 

Furthermore, in line with Genesis' utmost priority for safety, both the GV80 and GV80 Coupe come with 10 airbags, including a front-center airbag, and powerful monoblock brake calipers. 

New convenience features enhance the driving experience to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey. A Digital Center Mirror (DCM) displays the rearview camera feed, and the Built-In Camera 2 features improved image quality and recording capabilities. Hands On Detection (HOD) allows easy deactivation of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) with a simple touch on the steering wheel. 

The upgraded ADAS system is a combination of features that assist the driver, including Lane Following Assist 2 (LFA 2), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2 (FCA 2), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2), Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), Smart Cruise Control 2 (SCC 2), Front/Side/Rear Parking Distance Warning (PDW-F/S/R), and Front/Side/Rear Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA-F/S/R). This system autonomously assesses the driving environment and proactively responds to prevent accidents, ensuring that customers can always enjoy safe and comfortable driving. 

Genesis plans to collaborate with renowned designers to showcase the GV80 and GV80 Coupe with an exhibition at Genesis Suji from Oct. 7 to 15 and at the Busan International Film Festival from Oct. 4 to 13.
