]]>SEOUL, July 30, 2025 — Under the dazzling lights of the 2025 New York International Auto Show, Genesis revealed a daring leap into unchartered territory when it unveiled the X Gran Equator Concept. As the marque’s first adventure vehicle concept, it embraces the rugged spirit of overlanding, combining luxury with the thrill of the unknown.

The X Gran Equator Concept’s design tells a story of transformation. Its exterior, with clean lines, dark wheel arch cladding and 24-inch beadlock wheels, signals a readiness to tackle the wild. Geometric auxiliary lamps and a split-opening tailgate merge innovation with practicality, anchored by Genesis’ signature Two-Line headlamps. It’s a concept built to move seamlessly between sophistication and adventure.


But this concept is more than a standalone statement. It builds on over a decade of groundbreaking concept cars, each a bold step in Genesis’ evolution. These vehicles are more than creative exercises — they are foundational to the brand, expressing their distinctly Korean roots, technological ambitions and daring redefinition of luxury.


In this two-part series, join us as we dive into the most iconic Genesis concept cars of the past decade — 10 remarkable designs that have challenged conventions, captured imaginations and offered glimpses into the brand’s exciting trajectory.

1. Genesis Essentia Concept

The Essentia Concept is a grand tourer (GT) concept that boldly expanded the boundaries of Genesis’ design philosophy. Revealed at the New York International Auto Show in March 2018, it marked Genesis’ debut into the electric vehicle (EV)-based high-performance GT segment as the brand’s first battery EV. This concept car embodied the vision of a cutting-edge, all-electric luxury coupé. More than just a design study, the Essentia was a statement of intent, demonstrating Genesis’ ambition to create thrilling, beautiful EVs that blend advanced technology with passionate and progressive design.


The Essentia Concept’s exterior masterfully reinterpreted Genesis’ “Athletic Elegance” design philosophy, featuring a carbon-fiber monocoque with a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette and a low roofline, long hood and swept-back cabin. These elements are connected by the iconic Parabolic Line that gracefully runs along the shoulder of the car through to the muscular rear wheel arches. Dramatic butterfly doors enable effortless and elegant access to the vehicle. The rear of the car features an aerodynamic cut-off surface that houses the flush rear quad lamps and emphasizes the muscles of the rear haunch.


Inside, the cabin’s underlying design theory maximizes the connection between the car and driver. A mixed-material approach influenced by high fashion and classic color combinations includes cognac leather seats with chevron quilting. The driver and front seat passenger are divided by a slim center console covered in Oxford Blue leather that bisects the cabin. In front of the driver is an 8-inch widescreen display with piano black surround that displays only the information that is necessary for driving.

2. Genesis Mint Concept

The Mint Concept, unveiled at the 2019 New York International Auto Show in April, reimagined the concept of a luxury urban EV. The compact two-door, two-seater concept – a new typology – was designed for contemporary urban metropolises and demonstrated that luxury is not linked to size. The Mint Concept emphasized lightweight design and an intelligent, efficient electric powertrain, showcasing Genesis’ ability to think beyond traditional luxury segments and address future urban mobility needs.


With its clean, elegant surfaces, the organic exterior design is characterized by restraint and refinement. Features like the quad lamps that transport the brand’s Two Lines signature, G-Matrix graphics and Parabolic Line were carried over into production vehicles later. It is painted in Hunter Green matte, a nod towards traditional luxury cars, but more modern and fashionable. The most distinctive aspect is its innovative scissor-style openings that give side access to a generous parcel shelf in lieu of a traditional trunk. This design was created to facilitate loading the car in a more logical fashion, from the sidewalk, without blocking the walkway or needing to go around the back of the vehicle.


The interior was one of the first instances where the company showcased its “Beauty of White Space” interior design philosophy. Derived from a Korean aesthetic in which design is pared back and minimalistic, it brings a sense of calmness and expansiveness to the cabin. This is accomplished by structuring the interior to feel like a living space through craftsmanship, using lightweight textiles, cognac leather and mullion-free windows. Additionally, the center console can be folded, making the floating front bench into a settee. A small gauge cluster sits within the steering wheel further amplifying the feeling of space, while six small, copper-lined touchscreen readouts allow instinctive commands without losing sight of the road or contact with the steering wheel.

3. Genesis X Trilogy


The X Trilogy, revealed one at a time in succession, comprises the X Concept, the X Speedium Coupe Concept and the X Convertible Concept. This captivating trio celebrated Genesis’ Athletic Elegance design language in diverse forms, emphasizing the brand’s design capabilities and future direction for electric GTs. The “X” stands for “hidden hero” and the exploration of various potential designs for the brand.

X Concept

Revealed in March 2021, the X Concept is a high-performance GT concept that maximizes the use of the brand’s signature Two Lines design elements. The front of the X Concept features a low yet broad silhouette thanks to the combination of the shield-shaped Crest Grille and the Two-Line headlamps, which cut through the wheel arch. The car’s unique color, Lençóis Blue, was inspired by the lagoons of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil, which form into a lake during the rainy season, and was developed to express the level of sustainable luxury that Genesis pursues.


Inspired by the Beauty of White Space, the concept’s interior features a driver-oriented design, with a cockpit that surrounds the driver with all operating systems and displays. The space is further differentiated by coloring the driver’s seat scotch brown and the passenger seat an ocean wave green blue, which helps emphasize the concept car’s unique design. The entire interior is also made with upcycled materials that add unique character and highlight the concept’s eco-friendliness. The Two Lines design theme appears in the slim and indirect air vents that surround passengers, as well as the side window molding, and provides a sense of unity with the exterior design.

X Speedium Coupe Concept

The X Speedium Coupe Concept, revealed at Genesis House New York in April 2022, emphasized Genesis’ continued exploration of high-performance EVs with a unique and emotionally resonant design. The concept was born out of a freestyle design exercise that previewed what prospective owners of Genesis could expect from the marque’s next wave of EVs. The name Speedium was inspired by the passion for motorsports that was felt by Genesis designers at the Korean racetrack of the same name. It also encapsulates Genesis’ belief that passion for driving will remain strong in the era of electrification.


The X Speedium Coupe Concept inherited the timeless Athletic Elegance design philosophy of Genesis in an even more progressive way. While still a GT, its design hinted at future performance aspirations, as the Parabolic Line extending from the front to the rear of the car maintains a certain tension in the design. The deliberate “anti-wedge” design culminates in a streamlined look that exudes understated elegance.


On the front of the vehicle, Genesis’ signature Two Lines lamps have evolved into a full-width element that encompasses the shape of the crest resembling the Genesis Crest Grille. It was designed to carry the brand signature for the electrification era by integrating the daytime running lamps with the low beam and high beam together.


The concept’s metallic emerald green exterior shade is officially called “Inje Green” and references the mountainous landscape where its namesake Korean racetrack is located.


The interior remains conceptual, focusing on the connection between driver and vehicle. Its two-tone interior clearly distinguishes the passenger space from the driver’s cockpit, set in “Pinegrove Green,” which perfectly complements the car’s exterior color.

X Convertible Concept

The X Convertible Concept was unveiled in November 2022. The crowning third concept in the trilogy, the X Convertible Concept materialized the brand’s Athletic Elegance design language in its purest form yet. Sharing its architecture and electric powertrain with the X Concept and X Speedium Coupe Concept, the car’s ideal proportions are complemented by design purity and exemplify the continued refinement in orchestrating design elements that make up the company’s design language. The X Convertible Concept reinforced Genesis’ commitment to emotionally evocative design and its ability to translate its luxury aesthetic into various body styles, including a captivating convertible.


Sharing the athletic proportions, Parabolic Line and Two-Line headlamps of its coupe counterparts, its exterior also has muscular blisters around the wheels that form an athletic Coke bottle plan view and integrate into an elegant silhouette when viewed from the side. Its long bonnet, generous dash-to-axle, short front overhang and long wheelbase are drawn rearwards towards the long deck, accentuating its stately yet relaxed poise. The Genesis X Convertible Concept's exterior is painted in Crane White. White cranes represent nobility and sanctity in Korea and Genesis wanted to weave these cultural elements into its colorways. The result is an exterior surface coated in white with pearl particles, achieving a luxurious sheen that dynamically frames the contrasting interior.


The interior features Giwa Navy and Dancheong Orange colors, which lend the cabin a modern look and feel, befitting the car’s vibrant character. These colors are inspired by Korean traditional roof architecture, a nod to both the brand’s origins as well as the most important aspect of convertibles. Giwa Navy takes its shade from the distinctive “giwa” dark roof tiles used on many traditional Korean buildings, while the inspiration for Dancheong Orange is one of the complementing shades of the decorative colorings, or “dancheong,” also found on traditional Korean wooden buildings. The latter serves as a bold accent color, encircling the cabin in a two-line motif and featuring on the stitching of the seats and fabric.

4. Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept

The GV80 Coupe Concept, unveiled at Genesis House New York in April 2023, combines the practicality of a lifestyle-oriented SUV with the dynamism of a sports car. It was a statement of intent for more emotionally resonant, performance-oriented models and a preview of Genesis’ future direction. The GV80 Coupe Concept promised a dynamic and stylish alternative for Genesis enthusiasts, combining practicality with a strong dose of performance-oriented design.


This concept expertly blends the robust and commanding stance of an SUV with the sleek, sloping roofline characteristic of a coupe. It was the first Genesis concept to appear with a solid orange exterior color, which symbolizes the confident and passionate attitude of Korea. It also features a more aggressive front fascia sporting a double G-Matrix-patterned Crest Grille surrounded by quad lamps, which pair well with the unique five-spoke forged aluminum wheels and carbon fiber roof. All these design elements contribute to the concept’s dynamic driving qualities by lowering the center of gravity, emphasizing the vehicle’s sporty character.


The interior is a contrast between Genesis’ elegant Beauty of White Space philosophy and athletic attributes. It includes a three-spoke steering wheel, which emphasizes the sportiness of the GV80 Coupe Concept and contrasts with the black Nappa and suede leather with plaid double stitching, orange piping and carbon fiber weaves on the functional surfaces. The four bucket seats provide increased body support during cornering, contributing to passenger safety and comfort.

5. Genesis X Gran Berlinetta Concept and Genesis X Gran Racer Vision Gran Turismo (VGT) Concept


The X Gran Berlinetta Concept and the X Gran Racer VGT Concept delved deeper into Genesis’ performance aspirations and commitment to motorsports-inspired design, particularly within the digital realm. The Orange color of both concepts embodies Genesis’ high-performance spirit of Magma.

X Gran Berlinetta Concept

This stunning virtual race car was first designed specifically for the Gran Turismo video game series. Unveiled at the Gran Turismo World Series Finals in Barcelona in December 2023, it pushed the boundaries of automotive design with its extreme proportions, active aerodynamic features and a clear focus on track performance.


The X Gran Berlinetta Concept’s exterior embodies the most emotionally resonant expression of the Genesis brand’s characteristic Athletic Elegance design philosophy. Its design is pure and muscular with volumes centered around the wheels, emphasizing the cab-backwards proportions with Genesis’ typical anti-wedge attitude that is structured around a virtual parabolical tensioned theory common to the company’s lineup. Its dramatic lines and functional aerodynamics were originally conceived to dominate virtual racetracks.

X Gran Racer VGT Concept

A derivative of the earlier revealed Genesis X Gran Berlinetta Concept, this was the brand’s fourth vehicle developed for the Gran Turismo digital racing game series.


It has distinctive active aerodynamic flaps that are electronically controlled for precise adjustments to enhance the car’s aerodynamic qualities and road-holding capabilities, while the flat underbody design further reduces drag and improves vehicle stability. Additional aerodynamic enhancements include a front splitter, rear diffuser, strategically placed canards on the front fascia and a more aggressive rocker panel. The design also features the marque’s signature Parabolic Line that extends from the front to rear, which results in a timeless proportion that epitomizes Genesis’ aesthetic. Its iconic silhouette is filled out by voluminous fenders and a real carbon rear wing, giving it a look that exudes an aura of dynamism and raw power.

]]>SEOUL, Nov. 21, 2024 — True automotive beauty and originality often lie beyond the bodywork — it’s in the details, the finishes.


For Yongjun Heo, it’s in the wheels.


“Just like how shoes make or break an entire look, it’s no exaggeration to say that wheels complete the overall design of a vehicle,” says Heo, who leads the Genesis Exterior Design Team.


“That's why as a brand and as a team, we’re dead serious about wheel designs.” 

 

The Inspiration


Audacious. Progressive. Distinctly Korean.


These three characteristics form the foundation of Genesis’ design identity, “Athletic Elegance.” They serve as the guiding star for all Genesis models, influencing every aspect of their design and product planning. 

 

“They are what drive us to take bolder steps than other brands, touch the hearts of customers with new technologies and incorporate exclusive Korean aesthetics," says Heo.


In wheel designs, the emphasis on Athletic Elegance leads to one critical question during planning: whether to prioritize athleticism or elegance. 


"For dynamic models like the Genesis G70 and the Genesis GV70, more aggressive spoke designs are used to express dynamism,” Heo mentions. “In contrast, for models like the Genesis G90 sedan, multi-spoke or dish-type wheels are tapped to convey elegance.”

 

3 Rules 


Behind every wheel design, there are three specific rules that guide the Genesis Exterior Design Team.


“One, the wheels must complement and harmonize with the overall body design,” Heo points out. “Two, they should visually appear larger-looking, and three, they must communicate a clear design message.”


No matter how aesthetically pleasing a wheel may be, it won’t be used if it doesn't meet the above criteria, particularly the first rule.

 

To overcome the challenge of creating a wheel design that seamlessly blends with the model, wheels at Genesis are not designed in isolation toward the end of the body design. Instead, they are developed in conjunction with the rest of the vehicle right from the outset, which approach ensures that the wheels are harmoniously integrated into the overall aesthetic.


Two Lines and the G-Matrix Pattern


When asked what sets Genesis wheel designs apart from other brands, Heo quickly highlights the Two Lines, one of the brand's signature design elements. 


"We begin with the Two Lines and explore new structural forms based on reinterpretations from different perspectives," Heo explains, offering the double-layer spoke structure of the Genesis X Concept as an example. 

 

Heo’s favorite: the Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept’s five-spoke wheel.


"Considering that the X Speedium Coupe Concept was a concept vehicle, the wheels were designed to tease Genesis' future design vision," Heo recalls. "Although production feasibility was not a primary consideration, designing the wheels was still an incredibly difficult task. In hindsight, I think they ultimately elevated both the sportiness and elegance of the Genesis X Trilogy." 

 

Genesis wheels aren’t simply confined to aesthetics. They also offer functional advantages, like being lightweight while maintaining necessary rigidity.


The spoke cross-section design, for instance, effectively cools the brakes. The G-Matrix pattern, another one of Genesis’ signature design elements, helps secure rigidity and lighter weight, as seen in the G70 and the GV70 Sport models.


Limitless Possibilities


Looking ahead, Heo says he and his team have their eyes set on electric vehicles (EVs) and developing next-generation wheel designs that can enhance EV driving range. 

 

"There are countless designs to explore, along with new materials and manufacturing techniques that can significantly improve our aerodynamics,” Heo marvels. “The possibilities are limitless."

  • Award in Transportation category extends brand’s winning streak at prestigious event to nine years 
     

    • SEOUL, Jan. 17, 2024 — Genesis announced today that its X Convertible Concept has won the Transportation category at the Good Design Awards 2023. Notably, this latest accolade makes it the ninth year in a row Genesis claimed a design award at the esteemed event. 


    As the brand's inaugural convertible concept, the X Convertible completes the X Concept Trilogy and shares its architecture and electric powertrain with the X Concept and X Speedium Coupe Concept.

The Genesis booth at the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show and the newly launched ‘MY GENESIS’ app each earned recognition in the Exhibition Design category and Apps category, respectively, for showcasing Genesis' distinctive design identity. 


    At the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show, Genesis showcased the X Concept Trilogy — the Genesis X Concept, Genesis X Speedium Coupe, and Genesis X Convertible — in its booth that featured a hanging art installation inspired by the roof tiles of traditional Korean houses, or giwa. Crafted from 900 pieces of eco-friendly recycled acrylics, this installation embodies the graceful curves of traditional Korean rooftops. Complementing this installation, digital windows reminiscent of Korean architectural motifs portrayed the four seasons of the year, reflecting Genesis’ distinctly Korean influences. 


    Genesis also received a distinction in the same discipline with its ‘MY GENESIS’ app launched this May. This app integrates the capabilities of five existing apps — former MY GENESIS, Genesis Connected Services, Genesis Digital Key, Genesis CarPay, and Genesis Built-in Cam — into a single platform.     Kickstarting the line-up in the brand’s journey was Omar Al-Zubaidi, Head of Genesis Middle East & Africa, followed by a talk session on the trilogy design and brand vision for Genesis led by Graeme Russell, Genesis Chief Brand Officer and Luc Donckerwolke, Group Chief Creative Officer.

    The X Concept Trilogy is a representation of Genesis’ capabilities to design and develop cars without being bound by typology. The “X” is symbolic of a “hidden hero” and also stands for explorations of various design potentials of the brand. 


    “The X concept cars are beaming the Brand into the future and demonstrating that the new EV Genesis portfolio will be elegant, thrilling and desirable," said Luc Donckerwolke. 


    The first in the series was the Genesis X Concept, which made its debut in Los Angeles in March of 2021. The EV-based Gran Turismo concept car employed Genesis’ Athletic Elegance design language to exemplify the brand’s vision of sustainable luxury. 


    The second addition to the series is the Genesis X Speedium Coupe. This concept displayed the brand’s signature design language in an even more progressive way. Inspired by the passion for motorsports, this model focuses on the emotional value of driving in the era of electrification. This concept is also known for the evolution of the Genesis Crest Grille to signify its electric powertrain. 


    The X Convertible is the third concept in the trilogy, taking the X Speedium Coupe Concept further up the emotional scale. The X Convertible offers a freedom of expression and a heightened sensory experience thanks to the open roof, which allows a direct connection with the surrounding environment. 


    “Our pursuit of electrification revolves around our commitment to exploring new paths. And we aim to pave the way by becoming a zero-emission vehicle brand by 2030, and to pursue carbon-net-zero status by 2035” said Graeme Russell.

    Korea Night was organized to promote both the vision of the 2030 Busan World EXPO and Korean culture to key personnels gathered in Davos for the annual forum. The event engaged around 200 people, including key global figures in the political, business, and cultural fields. 


    In line with Busan’s World Expo vision for a sustainable future, “Transforming Our World, Navigating Towards a Better Future,” Genesis X Concept was selected as the exhibition model among various other candidates for its progressive take on sustainable luxury car design. 


    Featuring Genesis’ signature Two Lines, the X Concept is Genesis’ fifth concept car—following the New York, GV80, Essentia, and Mint concepts—and epitomizes the brand’s design direction in the electrification era. The “X” in the model name symbolizes a “hidden hero.” 


    In addition to the X Concept display, Genesis also deployed 30 EV models as official transportation for the forum’s Korean delegates.     • MALIBU, Calif., Nov. 15, 2022 — Genesis demonstrated its design versatility today with the unveiling of the Genesis X Convertible Concept in California. 


    The brand hosted an intimate viewing where guests were delighted with a surprise unveiling of a four-passenger open-roof concept. The venue was a natural choice as California leads the U.S. in adoption of electric vehicles and its temperate climate allows year-round enjoyment of the convertible vehicle format. 


    “Genesis started life by producing sedans mainly targeting business users. While creating a new, differentiated design DNA, we gradually increased the emotional appeal by applying this DNA to the SUV typology. Now, electric powertrains have given us the perfect scenario in which to enjoy nature, and propelled the brand to create vehicles with even greater emotional resonance,” said Chief Creative Officer, Luc Donckerwolke. 


    The EV Concept Trilogy: An Outlook on Genesis’ Future 


    The X Convertible Concept lineage can be traced back to the X Concept, a two-door grand tourer that showcased Genesis’ Athletic Elegance design language. The X Speedium Coupe Concept, the second car in the trilogy, displayed the brand’s signature Athletic Elegance in an even more progressive way. It also showcased an evolution of the Genesis Crest Grille, which evolved into a lighting signature to signify its electric powertrain. The X Convertible takes the X Speedium Coupe further up the emotional scale. 


    Beyond the Common Denominator of Athletic Elegance 


    The concept trilogy is crowned by the Genesis X Convertible, which materializes the brand’s Athletic Elegance design language in its purest form. The X Convertible's ideal proportions are complemented by design purity and exemplify the continued refinement in orchestrating design elements that make up Athletic Elegance. It is a beacon for the Genesis brand. 


    The Genesis X Convertible shares its architecture and electric powertrain with the X Concept in 2021 and X Speedium Coupe in 2022. Combined with its folding hardtop roof—that integrates transparent moon roofs above the front occupants to provide an open feel even when closed—the architecture and powertrain sets the perfect stage to communicate with nature, allowing users to enjoy the environment in a new way, free from mechanical disturbance. 


    The Genesis X Convertible's long bonnet, generous dash-to-axle, short front overhang, and long wheelbase are drawn rearwards towards the long deck, accentuating its stately yet relaxed poise. The anti-wedge Parabolic Line emphasizes the regal character of the profile, creating tension between the full surfaces through a gently rearward-sloping horizontal belt line, while muscular blisters around the wheels form an athletic ‘Coke bottle’ plan view and integrate into an elegant silhouette when viewed from the side. 


    The characteristic quad lights—from which Genesis’ Two-Line graphic identity originates—are also present on the X Convertible. As in the X Speedium Coupe, this graphic identity integrates the new EV face and forms an abstract of the Crest Grille. The cooling function for the powertrain and batteries has been relocated to lower openings in the front bumper. 


    The rear end of the X Convertible features a concave elliptical duck tail intersected by horizontal quad rear lights, as seen on the X Concept and X Speedium Coupe. The continuity of the elliptical shape is interrupted and crowned by a V-shape indentation that hints at the crest and wings of the Genesis logo. 


    The wheels are a combination of Genesis’ G-Matrix pattern orchestrated by an aero dish concave section. The spacers of this aero dish serve to extract heat from the brakes. 


    An Interior and Exterior that Capture Korean Aesthetic Nuances 


    The interior of the X Convertible features a driver-centric four-seat asymmetric layout—a consistent theme throughout all recent Genesis concept cars. Its wraparound instrument panel seamlessly integrates with the center console and cocoons the driver cockpit, emphasizing not only its performance-oriented attributes but its connection with the driver. 


    Inspired in part by traditional Korean roof architecture—a nod to both the brand’s origins as well as the most important aspect of convertibles—the interior design features Giwa Navy and Dancheong Orange colors, which lend the cabin a modern look and feel, befitting the car’s vibrant character. 


    The primary interior color is Giwa Navy—named after “Giwa," the roof tiles on Korean houses. Made from recyclable wool fabric, the textured, woven pad graphic wraps around the cabin, contrasting with the smooth and sleek leather surfaces of the seats. Meanwhile, Dancheong Orange—named after the traditional decorative colorings on traditional Korean wooden buildings— serves as a bold accent color, encircling the cabin in a two-line motif and featuring on the stitching of the seats and fabric. 


    The Genesis X Convertible's exterior is painted in Crane White. White cranes represent nobility and sanctity in Korea, and Genesis wanted to weave these cultural elements into its colorways. The result is an exterior surface coated in white with pearl particles, achieving a luxurious sheen that dynamically frames the contrasting interior. 


    Genesis’ Unparalleled Sensory Experience 


    The X Convertible is an open-air theater, providing an unparalleled sensory experience for all occupants. Convertibles offer freedom of expression and a heightened sensory experience thanks to the open roof, which allows a direct connection with the surrounding environment. The X Convertible takes the sensory experience a step further with its electric powertrain and high-performance sound system developed by sound master Guk-il Yu. First seen in the X Speedium Coupe interior, the immersive audio system was specially conceived to optimize acoustic performance.

The GV70, the X Concept, the Genesis EV Home Charger and the Genesis Wireless EV Charging System all took away honors in the transportation category. 


    The Good Design Awards, presented annually by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press, have acknowledged the brand’s design competitiveness for the seventh consecutive year. Genesis also won Good Design awards in 2015 for the G90, in 2016 for the Vision G Concept, in 2017 for the G80 Sport and GV80 Concept, in 2018 for the G70 and Essentia Concept, and in 2019 for the G90 and Mint Concept. In 2020, accolades went to the G80, the GV80, and the Copper Design theme used in the Genesis infotainment system. 


    The GV70 is an SUV inspired by the Genesis design philosophy of “Athletic Elegance.” The Parabolic Line that begins at the top of the Quad Lamps and runs deftly along the side of the SUV creates a dramatic contrast with the muscular rear fenders. The sleek coupé-like roofline and the chrome line that slopes toward the C-pillar help give the vehicle a distinctive appearance that is both sporty and powerful. 


    At the rear, super-slim Quad Lamps form the Two Lines that the brand is known for. With all its functional elements built into the bumper, the SUV achieves a clean, uncluttered look. The rear also features subtle details such as a G-Matrix Pattern on the bumper. 


    The GV70’s interior exhibits a design philosophy called the "Beauty of White Space,” which seeks to maximize passengers’ comfort and convenience. 


    The Genesis X Concept is an electric version of the Gran Turismo concept car. It uses Genesis’ core design element, the Two Lines, to present a vision for the future of electric vehicle design. The Two Lines design can be seen throughout the car’s interior and exterior, even the electric charging port. 


    The front of the Genesis X Concept is low and wide. It harmonizes with the Crest Grille, the Two-Line headlights and the double-layered bumpers. The Two-Line Quad Lamps exemplify the best of the brand’s leading design and technology. 


    The side follows the traditional Gran Turismo model design with a long hood and a short rear, and the Two-Line lamps leading to the headlamps and taillights are impressive. The Parabolic Line that runs along the side creates a dynamic, elegant impression with the voluminous fender. The oval wedge at the rear of the car exudes sleek simplicity. 


    The interior features a cockpit-inspired design, which means the operating systems and displays surround the driver. The Beauty of White Space is evident here as well. 


    The Genesis X Concept also demonstrates sustainable luxury by incorporating upcycled leather scraps from the vehicle production process into the seat belts, steering wheel and airbag covers.

    Created in 1955, the Red Dot Design Awards is considered one of the top three design distinctions in the world, alongside the iF Design Awards and the IDEA Design Awards. Each year, the open competition announces winners in three distinct disciplines: Product Design, Brand & Communication Design, and Design Concept. 


    This year’s awards saw a total of 4,110 entries from 49 countries submitted for consideration in the Design Concept category. Among them, a total of 61 Best of the Bests and 259 Winners were selected after a comprehensive evaluation process that covered innovation, feasibility, and functionality. 


    Unveiled in March of this year, the Genesis X Concept received the awards’ coveted ‘Best of the Best’ distinction, once again proving the competitiveness of Genesis design on the global stage.

    • SHANGHAI, April 19, 2021 — Today, global luxury automotive brand Genesis officially introduced its first electric vehicle, the electric model of the G80 (hereafter, Electrified G80) to the global market at the 2021 Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (hereafter, Auto Shanghai 2021), which took place at the Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Center. The occasion marked Genesis’ first appearance at Auto Shanghai. 


    In addition to debuting the Electrified G80, Genesis presented the Genesis X Concept, an EV-based Gran Turismo (GT) concept car, to the Asian market for the first time, marking the beginning of a new journey towards electrification.

    At the event, the brand’s global and Chinese market strategies were introduced, and the Electrified G80 and the Genesis X Concept were unveiled. 


    “Today is very special because it represents a variety of firsts for the Genesis brand. Not only because this is Genesis’ very first appearance at the Auto Shanghai, but it is also the first time we are unveiling a new product outside of Korea,” said Jay Chang, Global Head of the Genesis brand. “The Electrified G80, the perfect balance of athleticism and elegance, marks the beginning of our journey into the EV market, representing Genesis in the era of electrification.” 


    Genesis’ First EV Model 


    The Electrified G80 is Genesis’ first EV model, presenting a new standard for luxury electric sedans. It builds on the heritage of the G80 with its perfect balance of Athletic Elegance, while also offering customers much more value with its electric powertrain. 


    The Electrified G80 represents the perfect balance of Athletic Elegance, offering a luxurious and sophisticated driving atmosphere. 


    Based on the NEDC standard, the estimated maximum range per charge is more than 500km. (Based on the Korean EV certification system, the estimated number is 427 km[1]) while 350kW rapid charging enables the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes. 


    The Electrified G80 is available only as an AWD (All-Wheel Drive). It delivers powerful performance with 272kW and 700Nm torque, by applying motors with 136kW and 350Nm at maximum to the front and rear wheels. This allows for dynamic driving, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph just in 4.9 seconds. (sports mode, result from Genesis R&D Center) 


    The Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) can also automatically connect or disconnect the motor and drive shaft based on various driving conditions, including vehicle speed and driving mode, enabling seamless switching between 2WD and AWD to reduce unnecessary power loss and increase efficiency. 


    The Electrified G80 features a 400V/800V multi rapid charging system, allowing customers to use various charging infrastructures. Its driving motor and inverter can boost the level of voltage from 400V to 800V – a more optimized level for the system – for more stable charging. Customers can not only use the 800V rapid charging system without an additional converter, but a 400V charger as well. 


    The Electrified G80 also provides V2L (Vehicle to Load) feature that enables customers to use electric power of 3.6kW, which is higher than the level used by an average household, making it possible to use electric appliances conveniently outside of the vehicle. 


    In order to ensure a comfortable driving experience, Genesis equipped the vehicle with ANC-R (Active Noise Control-Road; formerly known as RANC). It reduces the level of noise significantly by measuring and analyzing road noises with four sensors and six microphones inside the vehicle, and by simultaneously creating sounds at the opposite phase. The Preview Electronic Control Suspension (Pre-view ECS), a suspension which can be controlled by information supplied through the front camera and navigation system, also helps to create the optimum driving experience. 


    The design inherits the G80’s design character - ‘Athletic Elegance’ and ‘Beauty of White Space’ for the exterior and interior, as well we various elements that differentiate high-end EV sedans. 


    The Genesis signature Crest Grille evolves into an aerodynamic crest featuring an inverted G-Matrix Pattern that emphasizes the Electrified G80's mission for sustainability. The charging door is located in the grille’s upper right corner, and is invisible when closed. Inside the charging door, the Two Lines chrome design has also been applied, highlighting its design identity and consistency. 


    The Electrified G80 also features various latest technologies that emphasize sustainability. The solar roof integrated into the roofline can generate electricity using sunlight with a solar panel that increases energy efficiency. 


    The vehicle also features various natural and recycled materials in its interior, including leather that utilizes natural dye in the seats, console and rear seat armrests. In addition, an eco-friendly 'forged wood' garnish for electric vehicles, which is made from recycled pieces of wood from the furniture manufacturing process, as well as environmentally friendly fabric made from recycled PET have also been applied. 


    Genesis will provide exclusive color options for the Electrified G80, including the Matira Blue (exterior) and the Dark Green Two-tone (interior). 


    Electrification is one of the key strategies for Genesis as it aims to design and provide new experiences for customers with its luxury EV models. Genesis initiates its electrification with its Electrified G80 model and will continue to drive innovation in this area with additional EV models to come. 


    Genesis X Concept’s Asian Premiere 


    Genesis also presented the Genesis X Concept at Auto Shanghai for the first time in Asia. The brand’s fifth concept car, unveiled online on March 31, 2021, epitomizes its new take on sustainable luxury car design and embodies the essential elements that it pursues in its designs. The name ‘Genesis X’ is a combination of Genesis and the letter X, which symbolizes a “hidden hero.” 


    Genesis X Concept maximizes use of the Genesis’ signature, Two Lines design, throughout the interior and exterior, including electric charging devices, capturing the design language of future Genesis models. 


    The front of the Genesis X features a low, yet broad silhouette thanks to the combination of the shield-shaped Crest Grille, which represents the brand's inherent dignity and pride, and the two-lined headlamps, which cut through the wheel arch. 
    Inspired by the Beauty of White Space, the Genesis X Concept’s interior features a driver-oriented design with a cockpit that surrounds the driver with all operating systems and displays. 


    In addition, the Free-Form display, which manages various functions such as clusters, navigation and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, and the Crystal Sphere Electronic Shift Lever, which integrates driving mode settings, add a high-tech atmosphere to the interior. 


    Genesis Drives Its Market Entry Into China 


    Almost six years old, Genesis is a relatively young brand, but that has allowed the brand to be more audacious and push boundaries. The result is in sync with the values of Generation Genesis - a new generation of vibrant consumers in China.

    During the press conference at Auto Shanghai, the pre-order of Genesis G80 and Genesis GV80 was kicked off and a new China-tailored business model was introduced to allow the brand to meet the Generation Genesis where they are, which is through an omnichannel approach based on direct sales, supported by trusted agents and online sales. 


    At Auto Shanghai 2021, Genesis exhibited a total of eight key models, including the Electrified G80, the Genesis X, two G80s, and four GV80s. 


    Meanwhile, Genesis plans to actively penetrate the Chinese market with various vehicles and content. Recently, Genesis hosted a series of events to mark its official launch into China. On April 2, the brand held a Genesis Brand Night at Shanghai’s International Cruise Terminal, which signaled the brand’s launch in China. 


    Genesis also collaborated with Shanghai Fashion Week, offering an elevated and in-depth exploration of progressive luxury style through world-class fashion concepts. On April 8, it opened its first Genesis Studio in China in the center of Shanghai, which completely embodies its customer-centric mindset and allows guests to immerse themselves in the entirety of the brand experience.     • LOS ANGELES, March 30, 2021 — Today, Genesis officially introduced the Genesis X Concept, an EV-based GT (Gran Turismo) concept car. 


    A world-premiere video captured the concept car’s debut, which took place on March 26 on a private rooftop in Los Angeles, showcasing the latest expression of Genesis design before a stunning backdrop. 


    To mark the occasion, Genesis partnered with award-winning director, Jason Bergh, in the creation of a film highlighting the dynamism of California’s car culture, Genesis’ pioneering spirit, and the promise of a sustainable future for all. The film can be viewed through Genesis Worldwide and local social channels. 


    “The car that we are unveiling today is a concept car that embodies the essential elements that Genesis pursues in its designs. Please take a moment to meet the future of Genesis design through this concept car, which embodies our brand’s progressive and audacious spirit,” said Jay Chang, Global Head of the Genesis Brand. 


    The Genesis X Concept is the brand’s fifth concept car, following the New York, GV80, Essentia, and Mint concepts, and epitomizes its new take on sustainable luxury car design. 


    In particular, the new concept car is a high-performance GT that maximizes use of the Two Lines design element that Genesis is known for. 


    The Two Lines theme, which is applied throughout the interior and exterior, including electric charging devices, embodies the design language of future Genesis EV models. 


    The name ‘Genesis X’ is a combination of Genesis and the letter X, which symbolizes a “hidden hero.” 


    "The Genesis X Concept can be described as the ultimate vision of Athletic Elegance, the inherent design language of Genesis," said SangYup Lee, Head of Genesis’ Global Design. "The signature Two Lines theme and sustainable luxury will be blueprints for the futuristic designs and state-of-the-art technologies that Genesis seeks to adopt in its future models." 


    The front of the Genesis X features a low, yet broad silhouette thanks to the combination of the shield-shaped Crest Grille, which represents the brand's inherent dignity and pride, and the two-lined headlamps, which cut through the wheel arch. The double-layered bumpers also create a strong impression. 


    In particular, the Two-Lined Quad Lamps symbolize Genesis’ unparalleled technology and design. 


    Moreover, a three-dimensional G-Matrix Pattern was applied to the sharp and intricate metal structure of the Crest Grille, the symbol of Genesis, to accentuate the imagery of a futuristic electric car. The internal pattern of the grille has been painted in the same color as the exterior in order to create a sense of unity. 


    Furthermore, the Genesis X presents a simple, yet sophisticated image by integrating the hood and the fender to create a single panel-based Clamshell hood, resulting in one clean, sensual and uninterrupted surface. 


    The bottom front air vent intake features a thin and sophisticated mesh form that not only creates a sturdy impression, but also helps cool down the vehicle, facilitates airflow, reduces air resistance, and helps extend mileage. 


    The side follows the traditional GT model design with a long hood and a short rear, and the two-lined lamps leading to the headlamps and taillights are impressive. In addition, the arching Parabolic Line that runs along the side, and the fender’s maximized volume, create a dynamic and elegant impression. 


    The Two Lines’ design in the Digital Side Mirrors and the side window molding accentuate the sophisticated aspects of Genesis design. 


    Furthermore, while the slick, slide-to-open charging door, which features no parting lines, creates a progressive and high-tech image, the Two Lines design element is emphasized through the two-lined lights around the charging port. 


    Genesis maximized the concept car’s sporty sensibility by incorporating two-layered, turbine-type alloy wheels with five spokes. The brake calipers’ lime accenting hints at the high-performance character of the Genesis X Concept. 


    The rear design, incorporating the shape of a horseshoe, exudes a simple and sleek image, while the voluminous fender creates a sophisticated, yet strong impression. 


    In addition, the taillights, which feature a two-lined design like the headlamps, evoke a sense of unity with the front, and create a sophisticated and sensual image with diffusers that accentuate the Two Lines aesthetic. 


    The Genesis X Concept’s Lençóis Blue color was developed to express the level of sustainable luxury that Genesis pursues. It is inspired by the lagoons of Maranhenses National Park in Brazil, where a lake forms only during the rainy season. 
    Inspired by the Beauty of White Space, the Genesis X Concept’s interior features a driver-oriented design with a cockpit that surrounds the driver with all operating systems and displays. 


    Differentiation of space by coloring the driver’s seat scotch brown and the passenger seat an ocean wave green blue helps emphasize the concept car's unique design. 


    The Genesis X Concept also features a dashboard that creates the sense that it is enveloping passengers and is connected to a floating center console. 


    Furthermore, the application of the Two Lines design element to the slim and indirect air vents that surround passengers, as well as the side window molding, emphasizes the model’s Two Lines concept while providing a sense of unity with the exterior design. 


    In addition, the Free-Form display, which manages various functions such as clusters, navigation and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, and the Crystal Sphere Electronic Shift Lever, which integrates driving mode settings, add a high-tech atmosphere to the interior. 


    The Genesis X Concept features bucket seats and four-point seat belts, which are optimized for driving, and its exposed metal seat frames create an athletic impression. 


    The Genesis X Concept’s interior materials showcase the type of sustainable luxury that the Genesis brand pursues. 


    The use of upcycled materials adds unique character to the Genesis X’s interior. A weave-patterned fabric made out of leftover pieces of leather from previous manufacturing processes was used for the safety belts, parts of the steering wheel, and the airbag cover, highlighting the concept car’s eco-friendliness.
