PIPO DERANI MAKES LONG-AWAITED RETURN TO INTERLAGOS WITH GENESIS MAGMA RACING

SAO PAULO, July 10, 2026 — The dust has barely settled on the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most grueling event on the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) calendar. But for the Genesis Magma Racing (GMR) team, the focus immediately shifts across the Atlantic to the 6 Hours of São Paulo.

The race in Interlagos is the next crucial step for Korean manufacturer Genesis in developing its Hypercar program. For Brazilian GMR driver Luis “Pipo” Derani, it means something a bit more personal — bringing his new team to his own backyard and fulfilling a very delayed dream. After all, this is where a young Derani won the São Paulo Junior Menor Championship in 2005, when he was just 12 years old. But an unexpected career trajectory kept him from his home turf for most of his racing life.

A Detour Through America

Already a strong driver from his previous experience in other European series, Derani was picked up to drive in the LMP2 class at the tail end of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) in 2014. He was later recruited for the FIA WEC 2015 season, taking home a win and seven podium finishes in the LMP2 class that year.

“I raced in the WEC in 2015-2016. 2015 was the first year that Interlagos was off the calendar, so it was a shame. Then my career took me to the United States and I spent most of my racing days there,” said Derani.

Derani did well in the U.S., racking up experience in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) SportsCar Championship. He won the 24 Hours of Daytona, coming first in the Prototype Class, in 2017 when he was just 24. After a few years of consistent podium finishes, he won the 2021 IMSA SportsCar Championship DPi Class with four wins and eight podiums. He switched classes and won again in 2023 in the IMSA SportsCar Championship GTP Class, securing a win and three podiums. Most recently in 2025 he replicated his 2023 IMSA win and also won the 12 Hours of Sebring GTP class.

“I spent many years in the United States racing in the Hypercar category, which is called GTP there,” said Derani. “I felt that I had successfully achieved everything I wanted to accomplish in the United States, like the wins in Daytona and Sebring.”

The Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) was introduced to IMSA in 2023, while Hypercar officially replaced the older LMP1 category at FIA WEC in 2021 as the top-tier prototype class.

The Genesis of a New Era

“Then I decided to take a new turn for my career, to return to Europe to compete in WEC with Genesis, which is a new team,” Derani said. “I wanted to go back to WEC and build a career at least for a few years to try to win another world championship. I felt that was my next objective.”

Derani made this decision in 2024, the same year Interlagos returned to the FIA WEC rotation.

“We started the project at the end of 2024, where I was announced alongside André Lotterer,” Derani said. “At that moment we had no engineers on the team, so we really started from scratch. Today we are here at Interlagos in our fourth race after a year and a half of development, seeing the team grow from two members to over 100."

Derani has already made his mark on Genesis Magma Racing’s debut WEC season. He brought the #17 GMR-001 Hypercar over the finish line at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, scoring the team’s first points. The team made the decision to pit and switch drivers during a Virtual Safety Car period near the end of the race. He was able to move up to eighth and defend his position through the closing stages against drivers with newer tires, holding on till the checkered flag.

Establishing the Groundwork

Interlagos presents a distinct set of demands. As one of the few counterclockwise circuits on the WEC calendar, its layout is notoriously taxing on drivers' neck muscles, while its significant elevation changes require a highly versatile car setup. Additionally, São Paulo's intense heat adds a layer of physical and mechanical endurance that cannot be overlooked. Even though it is technically a home race for Derani, the track's unique characteristics present a very different environment than what he and the team typically encounter.

“Interlagos will be the first race of what we call the second half of the championship, and has been a great learning process for us,” explained Derani. “In the second half of the year we’ll try to apply everything we’ve learned into practice and improve. I think we have a chance to show a good performance here at home. But we’re still learning. There will still be many things that we’ll look back on someday and say we could have done it better. There will be other areas where we’ll be surprised by what we’ll show. I hope to be more surprised than disappointed this weekend.”

As Genesis Magma Racing makes its debut at Interlagos, the absence of historical track data transforms this race weekend into an invaluable learning opportunity. Every lap will yield fresh insights that will help build the team’s technical foundation and provide a performance benchmark for future races.

“Being able to race at home again, at Interlagos, which I’ve only done before in Formula 3, the winter championship, will be very cool,” Derani said. “To be able to race in front of our public, in a world championship in the main category, will be extraordinary.”

A Paulista’s Homecoming

Coming off the intense, monthlong buildup to Le Mans, the São Paulo round arrives at the perfect time. The transition from the 13.626-kilometer, 24-hour, clockwise track in France to the much shorter and hotter 4.309-kilometer counterclockwise Interlagos offers a refreshing strategy reset.

For Derani, this means that he can share the thrill of motorsport and the progress of the Genesis Magma Racing program at the doorstep of long-time friends, family and local supporters who have followed his career since his karting days.

“It is a great pleasure for me to return to Brazil. Finally being able to return to WEC and race at home is a dream come true,” said Derani, sharing his excitement.

“I’ve had the great privilege of being part of this team from the beginning. Joining a team that is already running is one thing; you have to integrate yourself into it. But being part of and shaping a team from the beginning is a whole other thing. It is a large, long-term project that we hope will bear much fruit in the near future.”
