Fog lamps have become a rarity in the luxury auto industry. Here’s why. 


MFR Headlamps 


In the past, fog lamps were introduced as a solution to address the limitations of halogen lamps commonly used in vehicle headlights. Halogen lamps lack a concentrated beam of light, making it difficult to achieve sufficient visibility in foggy conditions. Fog lamps, on the other hand, emit light with a lower color temperature, resulting in longer wavelengths that refract less in wet conditions like rain or fog, greatly improving visibility. 


Fog lamps are also equipped with convex lenses that spread light over a wider area, illuminating the lower parts of the road that are beyond the reach of headlights. This not only enhances visibility of the lane, but also aids in identifying the lanes. 


But today, most cars on the Korean market don’t come with fog lamps at all, and much of that has to do with Multi-Face Reflector (MFR) headlamps, also known as multifaceted reflectors, or MR.

Before the 2000s, it was common to have headlamps with transparent covers and lens-type designs featuring optical patterns engraved to refract light. In recent years, however, MFR headlamps utilizing clear covers and reflector plates, as well as projection headlamps based on refractive lenses, have become more prevalent. These technological advancements, along with the emergence of light-emitting diode (LED) light sources, now make it possible to enhance the brightness of the lamps while achieving more accurate beam patterns with much less power, even in the absence of fog lamps. 


The Game-Changing Impact of LED 


LEDs emit a shorter wavelength and produce a close-to-white light, thereby exhibiting high forward visibility and quick responsiveness. In other words, LED beams alone are sufficient in providing excellent all-weather visibility performance, eliminating the need for auxiliary devices such as fog lamps that were traditionally used to support the main headlamp function. 


With an energy efficiency rate nearly 20 times higher than halogen lamps, LED lights are rapidly expanding their application range, making it increasingly difficult to spot fog lamps on the road.

Next-Level Lighting 


The elimination of fog lamps has sparked powerful transformations in the automotive industry, revolutionizing designs, efficiency and functionality. By removing fog lamps, vehicles have experienced reduced power consumption and weight, leading to improved performance. 


The elimination of fog lamps has also allowed for increased flexibility in front-end designs, enabling the integration of functional elements like air curtains for enhanced aerodynamics. 


Headlamp technology is entering a new era with significant advancements in illumination performance, miniaturization of lamp units, and enhanced integration with electronic systems and sensors. There is particularly a growing interest in the ability to dynamically change the lighting pattern in real-time, made possible by controlling individual units of numerous LEDs. 


A prime example of this cutting-edge technology is the Intelligent Front-Lighting System (IFS) found in most Genesis models. This technology maximizes lamp performance in low-light areas where visibility is crucial, while minimizing the impact of other vehicles’ visibility. 


IFS, which utilizes camera information, holds great potential for even better performance as lighting technology evolves. The introduction of the Micro Lens Array (MLA) headlamps in the 2021 Genesis G90 represents a significant development in this regard. By incorporating MLA headlamps, IFS can deliver enhanced lighting performance with a more delicate beam adjustment.
